Welcome to the ‘Hood: Reade Street Animal Hospital

reade-street-animal-hospital-1-by-tribeca-citizenDr. Mary Xanthos will be familiar to many Tribeca residents, as she most recently on staff at the Battery Park Veterinary Hospital. Now, in a return to her entrepreneurial roots—before working in BPC, she founded the Greenwich Village Animal Hospital—she has opened the Reade Street Animal Hospital.

Residents of the Upper West Side, Dr. Xanthos and her husband, Bruce Martin (the new hospital’s general manager), chose Tribeca because the neighborhood “split the difference” between the West Village and Battery Park City. “We got a good street!” says Dr. Xanthos after a behind-the-scenes tour. “We looked at a lot of locations, but many buildings didn’t want an animal hospital. We said, ‘But it’s going to be clean!’” Sure enough, the space that used to be the Macki clothing store is immaculate. Besides the cozy reception area, the hospital includes a pair of examination rooms, an operating room, a boarding area, and a room for X-rays, baths, and dental cleaning.

reade-street-animal-hospital-2-by-tribeca-citizenDr. Xanthos plans on differentiating from her competition by spreading out appointments so that patients (and their owners) get to spend more time with her. “I hate when I see a doctor and I’m in and out in 10 minutes,” she says. She’s partnering with a boarded surgeon, Dr. Amy Kantor—whose skill set allows the hospital to offer more services—but Dr. Xanthos says she’ll be “the main doctor.” In other words, you know who you’ll see on every visit.

She has been one of the few veterinarians around to offer house calls (most recently via Spot, née the Paw Stop), particularly for older, less mobile pets. As her practice ramps up, however, she says she doesn’t know if she’ll be able to continue doing so—but something in her voice makes it sound like she’ll try pretty hard to find the time.

Reade Street Animal Hospital is at 146 Reade St. (bet. Hudson and Greenwich); 212-274-1700, readestreetah.com. It’s open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
