Barry’s Bootcamp Is Coming

Fitness sensation (or so my Facebook friends say) Barry’s Bootcamp is opening in Tribeca. Torly Kid‘s Carol Adams had tipped me to the rumor—she’s a Barry’s fan—and someone at the Chelsea outpost confirmed it. He said it would be opening in three months, but Barry’s PR folks said it’ll be more like “later this year”*—first they have to focus on a new Wainscott location (which may or may not be a summer pop-up—I got confused might be seasonal). Anwyay! Barry’s Bootcamp will be at One York, the building at Sixth Avenue and Laight; you may know it better as the home of Maserati of Manhattan. The studio and a protein bar will be on the street level; below will be showers and lockers.

There are other bootcamps already operating in these parts. Barry’s Bootcamp, however, says it offers “an affordable, efficient and fun workout in a night club party environment that is nothing like the cliché boot camps”— Snap! Snap! Snap!—”found in every town.”

* UPDATE: They’re aiming for a September launch.

  1. When it says “affordable” what does this mean in terms of price? Clearly, what is affordable for one isn’t necessarily for another

  2. OMG DYING DYING DYING I canNOT believe it! My fitness dream comes TRUE!

  3. I think affordable means very expensive, if I am not mistaken.

This isn’t a value judgment, but the people in the picture really look like action figures, no?

  4. I live in LA and my friends swear by Barry’s. They’ve told me the people in the pics are actually teachers and students of their Weho location. If I can look like that going to Barry’s … Sign me up!

  5. @Jen – you can look like that, so I signed you up for 5 classes at the Tribeca location. I hope it’s not too inconvenient for you to get to from LA. “They’ve told me the people in the pics are actually teachers and students of their Weho location.” Ha ha, sounds like “Jen” is planting a “good” review.

  6. @Buzz @Jenn

Happy to take those 5 classes. Buzz — please mail those to PO Box 33160-2468.

  7. I’ve heard great things about it. Really excited to welcome this newcomer to Tribeca!

  8. I’m with ya’, Sari

  9. Oh Anon, you can’t mail classes. You sad little PR robot.

  10. But you can mail the tickets/receipt, no? Or whatever it is that will get me into the class. You grumpy little hater.

  11. The offer was to “L.A. Jen”, not you, ANon. You lumpy little mooch.

  12. Noted.

I thought is was worth a shot: to get an intense and satisfying work-out at an awesome new boutique gym paid for by the ever-charming Buzz. Thank you for the clarification. You miserable little cynic.

  13. Thought for the day: Once the name-calling starts, no one looks good.

  14. Totally agreed, Erik. But to keep in Buzz’s child-like sillyness: he/she/whatever started it.

I’m just trying to enjoy my workout… HAHA

  15. My apologies to all. Anon & Co. didn’t sound like a PR reps trying to gain ‘buzz” for their new gym. It was all my misunderstanding of genuine comments made by genuine people, much like when the neighborhood gets a new nail salon or coffee house.

  16. Thanks for the clarification. Apology accepted.

  17. I’m thoroughly confused by these comments. Is anyone else freaking out about Barry’s coming to Tribeca? I’ve been to the location in Chelsea and it’s amazing. I’m not really sure why @Buzz thinks there are planted people talking up a company that’s been around forever and clearly has fans from all over! It’s truly something you guys.

  18. I prefer Equinox for the best workout in Tribeca! I die every time I walk in because I feel so lucky that it’s in Tribeca!! I am dying just thinking about doing bench presses!!! I their juice bar!!! To die for!!

  19. I’ve been doing Barry’s Bootcamp in San Diego for a year. The instructors are amazing and actually look better than the WeeHoo instructors in the picture you see in this article. Barry’s is simply the ‘best’ I can do for my body in one hour (about five times per week). It gave my 50 year old body a 25 year old 6 pack. Barry’s is definitely better for my body and goals than Crossfit (or God forbid 24hour fitness.) I could go on & on. Feel free to reach out – Philip

  20. I still prefer Equinox for the best workout in Tribeca! I die every time I walk in because I feel so lucky that it’s in Tribeca!! I am dying just thinking about doing bench presses!!! AND their juice bar!!! To die for!!

  21. I have been going to Barrys for two months at the Clelsea location and LOVE it. i went to the other bootcamps here in NYC (one that makes you were camouflage fatigues while getting screamed at) another one which was a spinoff of aforementioned bootcamp as well.Barrys is nothing like those. Its hip, fun, and the class flies by and you are covered in sweat. The teachers don’t scream at you, they motivate you. In fact, not sure bootcamp is the right word. Its just as intense as a bootcamp, but its a club environment. its the best workout Ive ever had.

  22. I have been going to Equinox for two months at the Tribeca location and LOVE it. I went to the “bootcamps” here in NYC, like Barry’s. But Equinox’s classes are nothing like those. Equinox’s are hip, fun, and the classes fly by and you are covered in sweat. The teachers don’t scream at you, they motivate you. In fact, not sure “bootcamps” are the right workout for anyone. Equinox’s classes are intense as a bootcamp, but it’s a club environment. It’s the best workout I’ve ever had. AND the juice bar is to die for!!!!

  23. @Buzz – Stop trying so hard. You’re no Jim Smithers.

  24. Philip, the NYC Instructors are insane looking too! There’s something about having a teacher that walks the walk instead of someone who is in worse shape than me. (See Equinox) No offense Buzz, I was once a fan before I walked into Barry’s and died.
BarrysFan I know what you mean. “Bootcamp” is the wrong word and scares my friends.

  25. EQUINOX, EQUINOX, EQUINOX rocks!!! It’s the best workout in Tribeca!!!
