Seen & Heard: Yaffa’s Joy

••• The signage for Manhattan Proper, the “bar & social club” at 6 Murray, has gone up.

••• Centrico is closed for two weeks for renovations. But isn’t this prime margarita weather?

••• Mr. Fashion is coming to Broadway, where another menswear store used to be.

••• According to the flyers posted at Warren and W. Broadway, something called Diga Vision is shooting there today—but that’s a production company. And the phone numbers listed don’t work. That’s weak: Those flyers are there to make up in some small way for the inconvenience of having a film crew, so play by the rules, people.

••• Those of you who remember Yaffa’s Café (where MaryAnn’s used to be is now) probably also remember its proprietor, Yafa Faro. She is now making sesame-based treats called Yaffa’s Joy from her farm in Bucks County. “They are vegan and gluten-free, and they are very healthy and tasty,” she emailed when I contacted her about them. They’re also addictive: I told myself I’d eat one of the nine squares, then changed it to three, then I ate them all. You can buy them locally at Bell Bates (where they’re on the shelves across from the western cash register and at Whole Foods Tribeca, where they’re near the nuts. In both places, looking for the label won’t help, since it’s on the bottom of the clamshell packaging. I don’t know, either.

  1. Oh how I miss Yaffa’s and the awesome nacho’s!

  2. Me too! Come back Yaffa!!

  3. Me three!

    I want Yaffa’s back!

  4. I add to the chorus:

    Yaffa come back!

We moved to Tribeca 18 years ago partly based on our affection for Yaffa’s, not the least of which was its glorious, eccentric bathroom.

We thought to ourselves, a community that has a place like this at its core, could be our home.

    Yaffa come home!

  5. Yes, Yaffa’s come back because selfish Judy/Liat/Karen/Nicole want you to lose more money running a restaurant than you, unfortunately, did the last time around. And since Bubby’s has cleaned up their act, we miss those colorful health inspections. We miss that gloriously disgusting bathroom too. We loved taking a dump in a dump. Judy/Liat/Karen/Nicole please run for CB1 positions, we need more eccentric thinkers making resolutions about our neighborhood and evaluating business plans.

  6. You meant to say it the other way around: MaryAnn’s is currently where Yaffa’s once was on Greenwich Street.

And I agree – the sesame treats are extreamly tasty!
