Progress Report | August 2013

It can be hard to keep up with everything that’s coming soon (or coming eventually), so here’s a quick rundown. Click each link for the post that most thoroughly describes the business, including the location. The first handful are listed in possible order of opening—after that, it’s a crapshoot.

NOTE: This is a duplicate of the original post. To make a long story short, I accidentally published last week, then quickly unpublished it—but when I published it for real the other day, WordPress had still assigned it to the original date. (Scroll back to July 24, and you’ll find it.) I figured it best to redo the post so it’s where it really should be. The only problem is that there were a few very interesting comments, which I encourage you to read by clicking that link.)

But first, what’s opened since last time:

Gloria Jewel
Superstar Gym
Mulberry & Vine
The Butterfly
The Greek
Best Made Company
ManuelRacim
NY Kids Club
Distilled
Asphalt Green Battery Park City
Blueberry Fusion Café
Shinola
Khe-Yo

Coming up next:

RHEANNE WHITE
Hair salon on Jay; likely by the end of August.

LOVELY
Bridal salon on Duane; the word is August.

EDIBLE ARRANGEMENTS
The sign on Duane Street says it’s opening soon.

FORMER CHURCH & WHITE SPACE
Can’t say anything about this yet, but as anyone who has walked by knows, work is underway.

TERRA WINE BAR
In April, the wine bar at Franklin and W. Broadway was saying “maybe two months.” But when I called the sister establishment, Aria, they said, “Who knows?”

LIVE WELL COMPANY
The gym’s new space in the River Lofts building will hopefully be open by October.

BREAD TRIBECA
Does anyone know if this is really happening? Ever since it closed, Bread has been saying it’ll reopen in late summer in Tribeca….

TETSU
Masa’s teppanyaki spinoff on Leonard; the word had been late this summer, but that sure looks unlikely. I emailed the info@masanyc.com address as directed, but I don’t expect to hear back. Those generic email addresses are deadly.

CLOTHING STORE AT 393 GREENWICH
Where H&R Block was. Know anything?

BALCONY CAFÉ
Bar and restaurant in the old Mocca space; they’re saying “probably end of August, early September.”

SPRING STUDIOS NEW YORK
The massive advertising agency/studio (with restaurant) says it’ll be operational come September.

POSTMASTERS
Chelsea gallery relocating to Franklin. “Ask the DOB,” was the response. “We’re waiting because the building is landmarked; and even inside renovations need to go through the Landmarks Preservation Commission. I would say early fall—October, maybe end of September.”

EL VEZ
The Mexican restaurant’s Philadelphia flagship says the Battery Park City outpost will open in October.

LITTLE GYM
Kids’ playspace on Hudson.

READE STREET PREP
Preschool opening second location; this fall.

FLOR DE SOL REPLACEMENT
Construction is underway.

WASHINGTON MARKET TAVERN
Murray Street restaurant; the word had been September, but recent inquiries have yet to be returned.

AMERICAN CUT
Marc Forgione–affiliated steakhouse on Greenwich. September.

TAYMOUR GRAHNE
Hudson Street gallery spotlighting Middle Eastern art. September.

TUTTO IL GIORNO
Hamptons restaurant on Franklin.

66 LEONARD RESTAURANT & CAFÉ
Russian-backed restaurant and café in the old Matsugen space; they’re saying winter 2013.

Work has started, or should soon, but when they’ll open remains unclear:

TELEPAN LOCAL
Bill Telepan’s Greenwich Street restaurant. I asked if it might open this fall, or perhaps this winter. The answer: “Yes.”

HUNTER COLLEGE ART SCHOOL
Art school with gallery on ground floor.

FLYWHEEL SPORTS
Indoor cycling studio on Greenwich.

STILLFRIED WIEN
Shop on Walker focusing on Austrian furniture.

DAVID WEEKS STUDIO
Dumbo-based maker of furniture and accessories.

5 BEEKMAN HOTEL
Hotel and condos in one of downtown’s best buildings.

MULINO A VINO
Wine bar and restaurant on Church; they’re in construction. (Plans abandoned.)

CAFETERIA
A new outpost of the Chelsea restaurant; opening “sometime next year.”

NISH NUSH SPINOFF
Vegan and juicy.

THE ARMOURY
Men’s fashion boutique on Duane.

Work hasn’t started, to the best of my knowledge:

SWEETGREEN
D.C.-based salad chain opening on Greenwich. Set to open sometime this winter.

SCHOOL TBD (POSSIBLY MONTESSORI)
In the old Baker space on Hudson.

CHINA BLUE
China Café is setting up shop in the old Capsouto Frères space.

RACINES NY
Paris wine bar expands to Chambers.

TRIBECA GRAND CAFÉ
24-hour diner on Sixth Ave.

THE FLEA
The theater is hoping to move to Thomas Street.

  1. Just walked by the 66 Leonard St site and on the Church St side, there was a “Commercial Space For Sale/Rent” sign. The signed referred to 241 Church St, which looks like the same space? I wasn’t 100% sure.

  2. @lowphat: I checked with the people renting the old Matsugen space and they said that the owner is renting out part of the space (and the basement) separately.
