First Impressions: SkinnyPizza

The latest in a series of flash reviews of the restaurants at Hudson Eats in Brookfield Place. Previously: Black Seed Bagels, Num Pang Sandwich Shop, Mighty Quinn’s Barbeque, Little Muenster, Umami Burger, Olive’s, Tartinery, Dos Toros Taqueria.

I don’t think I can go too deep into whether the pizza at SkinnyPizza is good, because you can’t really judge it without factoring in the virtuousness you’re supposed to feel for eating it instead of real pizza, and that’s just not something I personally value.

The pizzas available by the slice all had whole wheat crust and/or skim mozzarella, so I ordered a 10-inch pie with “the original Skinny crust,” tomato sauce, “fresh mozzarella,” olives, and broccoli. (I knew I’d leave hungry and I wanted to bulk it up. Plus, I hoped the broccoli would get charred in the oven.) It took 14 minutes to prepare, and it came with a lid, doubling the waste, even when you order it to stay. I ate it all, but not with the extreme pleasure I associate with good pizza. If you fear carbohydrates and fat but you crave pizza, I suppose you might find Skinny Pizza satisfying.

SkinnyPizza has vegan and gluten-free options, and there’s also pasta, where you choose your pasta, sauce, add-ins, etc.

How was SkinnyPizza for you?

  1. I tried their arugula slice and thought it was great. It tasted much better than it looked. (Without leaving you overly stuffed.) I had personally never heard of them prior to Hudson Eats. That said — I miss Dean’s.

    • Have you tried Tres Sorelle on Reade? We’ve only eaten there, so I can’t vouch for delivery, but we preferred them over Deans round pie (which we always had delivered). I do miss Deans square pie though.

  2. We tried slices of both the Skinny Classic (which was reheated for us) and one with sausage (which was fresh from the oven). The crust of the reheated one was more cracker-like than pizza-like, but still very good. We liked the taste of both, but we felt that after with 2 slices at lunchtime most people would be ready for something substantial to eat mid-afternoon. But as a snack, a Skinny Classic slice could stop your pizza craving nicely (if you like thin crust).
