Seen & Heard: New Pizza Joint

••• What a disappointment: A reader going by Resident noticed that the recently closed Star Pizza store at Murray and Church will be an outpost of the Famous Famiglia pizza chain.

Famiglia pizza••• From Notify NYC: “Weather permitting, two F/A-18 Hornets will conduct a flyover at an altitude of 2500 feet, on Thursday, 8/28 at approximately 9:30 a.m. The aircrafts will travel from JFK Airport over the Atlantic Ocean through the Verrazano Narrows, and over the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge. The flyover will then be conducted in reverse route back to JFK Airport.” The pic is courtesy Wikipedia.

••• Tried Gelato Ti Amo on John (between Broadway and Nassau) for the first time yesterday. It was good! Although they only had four flavors—something about waiting for a shipment. I can vouch for the mint chip and the chocolate, but if it’s 90 degrees out you may want to eat it in the shop. I was a mess.

Gelato Ti Amo••• A café and bakery called Lot 77 is opening in the Southbridge Towers storefront where a pizza joint used to be. One of the signs in the window also says “sticker design” (?).

Lot 77 Cafe and Bakery••• A close-up of the sign in the window of Dorlan’s Tavern, in the works on Front Street—in the spot where Stella was. (Thirty beers? Coals to Newcastle….)

Dorlans Tavern••• Checking in on the construction at Peck Slip School.

Peck Slip School••• And 56 Leonard, which is looking kind of like a half-eaten corn cob…. Is anyone else surprised they’re adding the balconies after the fact?

56 Leonard 82714••• Press release: “Kansas is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Tomer Aluf. Opening September 6, the works will be on view through October 11. Tomer Aluf’s paintings all use the word Oi!! as a point of departure. Oi!! is a casual British greeting. Oi!! is a subgenre of punk that surfaced after punk sold out. It looks different from the Yiddish ‘Oy,’ but it sounds the same.”

  1. I love the military aircraft fly that up and down the Hudson all day long. The F/A-18s should be a real treat.

  2. Maybe Donald Trump and Sarah Palin will stop by the neighborhood.

  3. Very bad news re Famiglia Pizzeria!!!

  4. I’m not sure I’m familiar with Famiglia, and it sounds like that’s to my benefit. But I recently tried Saluggi’s for the first time, and was pleasantly surprised. I can’t say it was a great pizza, but the ingredients were excellent (they make their own mozzarella) and it was baked perfectly. Also, the people who run the place are awfully nice. So if Famiglia is unwelcome, perhaps a proper response is to send more business Saluggi’s way.

  5. Famiglia Pizza is an international chain with locations on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and in Newark Airport. Institutional, not appetizing!
