Fairway Market Is Looking to Pull Out

Well, this will really mess up your day. From the Commercial Observer:

Fairway supermarket chain may have gained attention for its expansion tear and accolades as a specialty retailer, but the company is looking to bail on at least one of its leases in Manhattan, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. The lease in question is at Jack Resnick & Sons‘ 255 Greenwich Street in the Financial District with other Fairway lease transactions possibly facing the same fate.

255 Greenwich

  1. This is very disappointing. Whole Foods needs some competition in the produce/meat departments. Personally, I would rather have a Trader Joe’s in the neighborhood.

  2. oh no! We were really looking forward to it.

  3. I’m with cami. Here’s the location request form from TJ’s website http://www.traderjoes.com/about/location-requests-form.asp

  4. Trader Joe’s for the win! let’s make it happen!!! i can’t deal with going to chelsea on a weekly basis.

  5. Nice to have had it, but wasn’t 255 a site where radiation treatments took place? Anyway, better location in the J&R space. For any big market chain.

  6. I have started a campaign on FiDi Fan Page to get as many people as possible to clink on the store request link at Trader Joe’s to request that they take over the lease at 255 Greenwich for their FiDi store! Thanks Andrea for the link! I’ve already filled one out. :-)

    • Luis – That’s great. I have been filling out the request form for several years now, giving TJs the Food Emporium address (316 Greenwich)!

  7. The new building 70 Pine Street would be a awesome location for Fairway or Trader Joe’s! The ground floor level is currently open for retail space and is huge.We need a large-scale supermarket down there by the Seaport, I vote yes!

  8. I called a few times to check on their progress. Should have known something was wrong. I think that space is too big for Trader Joe’s though we would all love one down here. I really like Fairway and am disappointed that they now may not come downtown.

  9. I would be very disappointed if Fairway pulls out. Whole Foods is a disaster.

  10. I have to agree with Mark Bittman on TJs:

“I don’t think of it as a place to shop for actual food,” he said. “It’s great for milk, nuts, bulk items, packaged foods, but I’d never go there for fish, meat, vegetables or fruit.”

    • I completely agree. Trader Joe’s has so many packaged foods, which are understandably popular, but not for me. I was excited for Fairway because it’s a place where you can get EVERYTHING, fantastic produce, meat and fish as well as a dizzying array of all of the other things. It would be the end of my current routine of Whole Foods for some things, Food emporium for others and Chelsea Market for still others.
