New Kid on the Block: Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness facadeIf you’re craving a no-frills gym, you’ll want to check out Planet Fitness, now open on Canal. The monthly rate is just $10—with a $29 annual fee—for basic membership, which gets you access to the 16,000-square-foot below-grade floor of cardio, resistance machines, and free weights. Or upgrade to the “black card” level for $20 a month—which grants access to all Planet Fitness locations, unlimited guest privileges, and the use of the tanning booths, massage chairs, something called Total Body Enhancement (which seems to involve infrared light), and more. Both membership levels include as much fitness training as you’d like—you sign up for small-group sessions of around five people—and you can cancel at anytime.

Also of note: It’s open 24 hours during the week, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. And there’s no towel service in the locker rooms.

Planet Fitness is at 370 Canal (between Church and Sixth Ave.), 646-216-3031; planetfitness.com.
