Washington Market Tavern Has Closed

Washington Market TavernI’m sorry to report that Washington Market Tavern has closed after just eight months. The restaurant got off to an overly ambitious start, and a course correction in October apparently wasn’t enough to save the day. We’ll have to wait to see whether Eric Schwimmer, a Tribecan (who also owns Mudville 9), has more plans for the handsome Murray Street space.

  1. Some friends and I stopped in on a Saturday night after a movie (around 11 PM) to have a few drinks. The place as empty and we were kind of ignored until they finally begrudgingly told us that they were closing. Didn’t bother trying to go back.

  2. I am not surprised. I don’t know who ‘creative directed’ this place, but there was no ownership of what vibe was being created the night I tried this place out. Everyone who worked there was quite under 30 and they appeared to be more concerned with fighting over whose playlist was going on next (and music too loud) to pay attention to us. Also, every thing looked in concept amazing on the menu but was not quite up to par on arrival.

I’m sorry about it – it looked like it could have been good – at least in concept.

  3. Visited three times. Each time, it took 10 minutes to make a single mixed drink, even though the place was empty. Ordering drinks became a running joke. On the third visit, food took nearly an hour to arrive. Once again, the place was empty. Through poor staffing and poor planning, the owner managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

  4. The one time I was there, the service was comical. They finally recognized how horrible it was and at least gave us the drink for free — the one we were waiting for throughout our entire lunch. Not surprise. NYC is no place for amateur waiting staff.

  5. Not surprising. Didn’t offer anything unique nor interesting, had no particular selling point and lacked atmosphere. And I agree with others re the poor service.
