Seen & Heard: Battery Park City to Get Its Own “Taste of” Event

••• Now that Battery Park City has a quorum of restaurants, there’s going to be a Taste of Battery Park event. It’s Sunday, Oct. 4, from noon to 3 p.m. on the Brookfield Place plaza, and it benefits P.S. 89. The list of participating restaurants includes North End Grill, Le District, Dos Toros, Northern Tiger, El Vez, Shake Shack, Harry’s Italian, P.J. Clarke’s, Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar, Tartinery, Blue Smoke, Financier, Le Pain Quotidien, and François Payard Bakery. I’m sure we can inspire Pier A and Parm to join in, not to mention the rest of the Hudson Eats establishments. From the release: “VIP Tickets ($1000 for a table of six) are now on sale to the public at tasteofbatterypark.com and include reserved VIP seating, wait service, 24 tastes and a gift bag from Brookfield retailers and sponsors. General Tickets ($25 in advance, $35 at the event) will provide five tastes and will go on sale in early September. The event will also include a Kid Zone with activities and entertainment and a beer garden with beer and wine for cash sale.”

••• The Montessori School of Manhattan at 53-55 Beach put up posters saying that it’s expanding, so I asked director Bridie Gauthier for the details: “We are taking over the basement, more space to the west (which is the 55 Beach side), and also additional floors above our current space to add a large lobby, a gym, theater, and more classrooms.”

••• Press release: “Beginning this Friday, July 10 through the end of the month, Seaport Film & Food Festival, a four-week international film and food series, returns to the Seaport District. For four consecutive Fridays beginning July 10, a delicious array of complimentary food samples and drinks highlighting a different country will be served from 7 p.m., followed by an outdoor free screening of an acclaimed international film at the Front/Row screen at sundown, both located at Fulton and Water Streets.”

••• Added to the agenda for Community Board 1’s Landmarks Committee meeting on Thursday night: 38 Park Row, application for restoration of storefronts. That’s the building with Starbucks in it.

••• When I walked into El Vez Burrito yesterday at 11:45 a.m., I was the 20th person in line. When will it open on weekends? It’s so much better than Chipotle.

  1. Interesting and a good idea as a fundraiser. Just curious as ps 276 and ps 89 always partners on big fundraisers in BPC (like Run for Knowledge) as there are 2 schools here. I wonder why they chose not to partner on this fundraiser.

    • I would guess the folks at PS276 were not even asked or told about it…it seems like a Brookfield sponsored event. Would have been awesome if they included all of the neighborhood restaurants and schools.

  2. It is not Brookfield, they don’t care (or even know) anything about the community. It was initiated by ps 89 PTA.

  3. Well Taste of TriBeCa started w/150 parents but they included their sister school. 276 will need to be included if the event wants to be neighborhood & community inclusive. More the merrier w/these Taste events.
Agree Brookfield doesn’t know or care about the community. WFC will always be the WFC…the site never had a brook or a field…Omaha may have many brooks & many fields however.
