Seen & Heard: The Church Street Stench Has Been Addressed

••• S. and R. sent photos of the MTA cleaning out the drainage problem at Church and Chambers! I asked the folks at City Hall Wines & Spirits about it. They said the MTA flushed it out, then pumped it out, then deodorized it. Now we just have to see whether the blockage is fixed—and whether Dona Bella’s garbage (or hosing down of its mats, which is my new theory) will just cause the resulting stench to come back.

••• Remember that sign insisting the cops shouldn’t park in the bike lane on Varick? Cars 1404 and 1741 didn’t see it.

Technically my husband owns it and I do quite a bit of consulting. Danielle Potter is managing it—you’ll recognize her from Franky Wines which she was assistant managing before moving to the Hudson Valley about a year and a half ago. Lots of familiar bottles on the shelf and some new treats. Expanded spirits selections and an ever increasing assortment of New York wine, spirits and ciders.”

  1. I hope that stench is staunched! It’s been unbearable every time I pass it coming out of the subway or on my way along Church. As an avid cyclist and commuter, I agree the police cars in the bike lanes have really been annoying lately. Speaking of barriers to safe riding in the hood, fashion week shenanigans and film shoots have also gummed up the works. Permit costs for these events should be quadrupled and their activities carefully policed so they do not interfere with foot traffic, bike paths, and general community safety.
