Nosy Neighbor: What’s Coming to the Cosmopolitan Hotel’s Storefronts?

What do you think is coming to 125 Chambers? I see workmen putting materials into the empty café space next to the Cosmopolitan Hotel, and there are now work permits on the window. I asked the workmen, but they didn’t speak English. It also looks like they’re doing something around the corner on W. Broadway. —J.

You’re talking about four storefronts. There are two at 125 Chambers (where the larger Cosmopolitan Café and Elégante Nails were) and two at 95 W. Broadway (where the smaller Cosmopolitan Café and Cosmo Daily News were)—and they’re all within the Cosmopolitan Hotel. Back when the old MaryAnn’s space at the corner of W. Broadway and Reade was going to be Cafeteria, the plan was for the two W. Broadway storefronts to be part of the restaurant; Cosmopolitan co-owner Gerald Barad confirmed that that’s still the plan now that Cafeteria has made way for Serafina.

As for the storefronts on Chambers, it’s not clear whether they’ll be home to one business or two, but it sounds like it could be one: “We haven’t finalized the lease for Chambers yet,” emailed Barad. “Most likely food.” And he invited me to check back in a month, so stay tuned….

  1. The old Mary Ann’s space is supposedly structurally unsound due to the leaning building next door. I doubt anything will be happening there for quite a while.

  2. When you contact Barad again, will you ask if all the promises made for Cafeteria regarding noise and late night sidewalk traffic/use will hold for Serafina too? In other words, remind him the neighbors are still here and still care? Thanks

  3. I just assumed that the storefronts adjacent to the West Broadway entrance to the Cosmopolitan were being renovated to expand the hotel’s cramped entrance there and perhaps provide some kind of lobby — ditto for the entrance on Chambers . . . were they meant to remain shops wouldn’t they have been rented out a long time ago?
