A FiDi Time Capsule

HirsuteI used to say that FiDi would have more charm if someone would go and update all the signage, but I’ve done a 180. The old, dated signage (and in some cases quirky business names) appeals to me much more than what it’s replaced with—the generic strip-mall stuff you see everywhere. It’s like shopping for a souvenir T-shirt in a destination: There was a time when the graphics had their own oddball personalities, but now they’re all in the same faux-classy styles. Anyway, as FiDi gets taken over by chains, I expect these holdovers will be “cleaned up,” and it’s a pity. Consider this a time capsule.

  1. Wongs Custom Tailors is already gone; replaced by the very tasty Num Pang.

  2. I have the exact same feeling about these signs. I really used to love the vibe on those streets and it is changing so quickly. Nassau still has some funky places but they will be gone within a few years, if that. The Beekman looks like it will be beautiful, but that block of Nassau is going to be utterly transformed.
