In the News: $5 Million Repair Bill for the Irish Hunger Memorial

Irish Hunger Memorial••• “The Battery Park City Authority plans to spend $5.3 million on repairs to the Irish Hunger Memorial, which was built in 2001 at a cost of $5 million. The Authority also considered demolishing or relocating the structure, because the financial upside of such a move could amount to ‘hundreds of millions of dollars,’ according to BPCA chair Dennis Mehiel.” Thank goodness there are no more hungry people in the world, or the amount of money spent on this memorial would really be embarrassing. —Broadsheet

  1. Put the toll on the inbound Verrazano Bridge. As it stands, truckers from the south go into Staten Island, into Brooklyn, through Manhattan, and out to NJ without spending a dime. Thanks, of course, to Alphonse D’amato…and you wonder why the tunnels to NJ are so packed?

  2. Tear it down. Return the good parts to Ireland. It was only a campaign stunt by Pataki for his third-term re-election.

  3. Dennis Mehiel, said this????? ”Thank goodness there are no more hungry people in the world, or the amount of money spent on this memorial would really be embarrassing?”

    I’m embarrassed for him.
