New Kid on the Block: Current

Current rowing studio founder Josh Ozeri2I recently wondered aloud about the door stylishly marked “CURRENT” at 333 Church, and how something interesting appears to be upstairs. Lo and behold, Current is an indoor rowing studio opening Monday.

The man behind it, Josh Ozeri, was a co-founder of the city’s first indoor rowing studio, Brooklyn Crew; after that closed, he decided to open Current on his own. He fell for rowing when, growing bored at the gym, he started taking all sorts of other classes (spinning, rock-climbing, etc.), which proved to be a lot more fun. Then he went to Row New York, where you do a 30-minute indoor session before getting out on the water. From there, it was a short leap to opening a fitness studio devoted to rowing classes. “It’s the best workout you can imagine,” says Ozeri.

Why Tribeca? “It’s a neighborhood with a strong sense of community, and this concept is built around community.” The 1,200-square-foot upstairs space was previously storage for Uncle Steve Car Stereo on Canal, and there was evidence that someone had been living there at some point. After a gut renovation, it’s clean and crisp, with an all-white front room (with combination lockers and two dressing rooms) leading to the rowing room. There are currently 16 machines, though Ozeri hopes to increase that soon. “They’re custom machines,” he says. “In most rowing machines, the seat slides and the feet remain fixed. This the opposite. It works your core even more.” The lighting goes dark once the rowing starts, except for a spot on the instructor, so you feel like you’re in your own space.

The 45-minute classes include stretching at the end, and rates start at $34 per session and go down if you buy a package. As an extra incentive, Current is offering Tribeca Citizen readers a free class through the end of February: Just email info@currentfitness.com and mention TC-FREE.

Current is at 333 Church (at Canal), 212-966-3150; currentfitness.com.
