Where to Order Chinese Food in Tribeca

“Could we have a poll of where everyone orders Chinese delivery/take-out in the ‘hood?” commented HH on the post about Taco House going half-Chinese. “I still haven’t found my go-to spot and I’ve been living in Tribeca for 10 years, as nothing comes close to the take-out joint I frequented in Forest Hills where I grew up.” And the responses were:

  1. Erik ! Amazing thank you!! It’s going to be a loonnngg winter (maybe) with lots of delivery for me :)

  2. Actually both Staten Island Chuck and Phil predicted an early Spring so no long Winter

  3. If you can’t handle gluten and are frustrated by the poor GF listings on sites like seamless, go straight to Wei West, who has the most extensive GF Chinese menu I’ve found:

  4. Excellent Dumpling is great for delivery.
You can get great fresh dumplings from Tasty Dumpling but they also sell bags of 50 frozen dumplings for $9-12 depending on what’s inside. Personally, I think it is phenomenal to have a bag of hand-made awesome pork dumplings in freezer, ready to steam at any given time.
China Blue is an experience – to order in from there is missing out. The food is great, but the decor is swanky.
Peking Duck House on Mott is also a nice destination for Chinese.
    Happy New Year!

  5. China Blue is our go to. I also order form Nom Wah on Caviar (local delivery fee $1.99 for Tribeca).

  6. OK, so I only ever order their soup dumplings, but Shanghai Cafe Deluxe on Mott will deliver to TriBeCa. Usually requires an interesting phone call to make it happen though.

    • I have tried to order from Shanghai Cafe Deluxe over the past 2 weeks on Seamless and was told they do not deliver anymore. Do you have to call directly?

      • Do the soup dumplings come in tack when they get to your door? I only get soup dumplings at Joe’s Ginger but sometimes I’m too lazy to walk the few blocks to Pell street…

        • Most of them do. Once in a while one might be broken.

          • The dumplings normally hold up pretty well. Haven’t ordered from them this year though so maybe they’ve tightened the delivery order. About 1 in 4 calls I always end up having to convince them that yes, they can deliver to me. And phone call only, no seamless afaik.

  7. New Fresco Tortillas. It does Chinese and Mexican and it is SO cheap and yummy!!!

    • i have to agree. speedy delivery and cheap prices. i go in there sometimes and am just amazed by the efficiency of the lady who take the orders. talk about multi-tasking…

  8. Famous Sichuan is my choice for Chinese. Their Hunan chicken is fantastic, the dumplings aren’t too think or chewy and the hot and sour soup is great for the clearing out the sinuses and dirt cheap too.

When I want something Asian-style but lighter and healthier I go with Mooncake. The spicy Thai steak salad is perfect.

  9. Another vote for Famous Sichuan – so good!

  10. We order from A La Saigon…yummy and fast! Although it says Vietnamese…many Chinese style dishes!

  11. Thank you for this survey —…it’s awesome !

  12. OOO! Very excited to learn about CAVIAR!!! THX!

  13. Grand Sichuan?
Isn’t that the place that glorifies the psychotic Chairman Mao?
As I recall, I ate once (and only once) at one of their locations and was handed out Mao propaganda along with the meal. There were portraits of Mao also. Left a “bad taste”.

    • not to get too political but a lot of chinese people would disagree with your take on mao.

      • I’m sure there are Mao supporters in the world as well as Stalin supporters. My family suffered greatly under communism. I will not support any business that romanticizes them.

  14. jing fong delivers to tribeca? i had no idea. it’s my daughter’s favorite chinese restaurant. the dim sum scene there on weekend is insane!

  15. P.S. What I did find surprising was the owners themselves admit to the suffering under Mao, in a Times article I just found, and yet put on the appearance of promoting Mao in the restaurants. Maybe they thought they were being ironic? Like Soviet kitsch?

    From the article:
“”We were afraid some people didn’t like to hear the name Mao Zedong,” he writes, acknowledging that ”many Chinese, including the owners of this restaurant, suffered a lot under Mao’s leadership.”

  16. Wei West is the worst Chinese food I have ever had anywhere. It is virtually tasteless and sadly includes very few quality ingredients in its food. Eg Fried rice is literally just that, virtually no egg, vegetables, meat or chicken, scallions, condiments. I’ve tried multiple dishes and given up.

  17. I highly recommend Buddha Bodai for vegetarian Chinese fare!
