Loft Peeping: Mark Berryman

Mark Berryman kitchen photo by Matthew Williams courtesy DwellThe April issue of Dwell features the spartan-but-warm West Street loft of microfinancier Mark Berryman and his dog, Leji. Berryman was already living in the 1864 building when a “smaller yet more desirable apartment” became too tempting to pass up. It needed a total renovation, so he hired Workstead, the company that also designed Arcade Bakery. “Workstead came back with a plan that included taking down many of the interior partitions [in the 1,800-square-foot space], tearing out the drywall ceiling to expose the building’s hefty original fir joists, and painting the existing pipes black.” The new buildings going up on either side forced Workstead to rely solely on light from the west, which is why the company went with “oversize openings to the master bedroom and den, with sliding wood-and-glass doors and curtains that can be pulled across for privacy. Likewise, materials throughout the home maximize the space’s limited light. In the open kitchen, at the rear of the apartment, the designers clad custom cabinets in subtly reflective zinc.” Two last items of note: The bathrooms were inspired by Donald Judd’s former Soho home, and two pieces of furniture—the dining table and a chair in the guest bedroom—are from Uhuru, which has a store on Franklin.

The Dwell post includes more details in the text (by Tim McKeough), and the slideshow of Matthew Williams‘s photographs also has some “before” shots. Click the photos below to enlarge: I threw in some from Workstead’s website, and I’m pretty sure they’re by Williams, too.

UPDATE: Dwell added a follow-up post with more credits, and it says the living room chairs are Dinamarquesa Armchairs by Jorge Zalszupin from Espasso.

  1. Very nice place, and what a great design by workstead.

Does anyone know the source/producer of the two lounge chairs in the living room across from the sofa?
