Sidewalk Shed Collapse

It’s a New York City nightmare, along with falling air conditioners and subways stuck mid-tunnel: Part of the sidewalk shed at 153-155 151 Hudson collapsed earlier today. “Fortunately no one was hurt,” reports Toni Silber-Delerive (who also sent these photos). “It fell down on two lanes of Hudson and the whole sidewalk, and it crushed the loading dock at 155 Hudson. About fifty firemen were there and four or five trucks.”

  1. Any guess on how long it had been there? Is that the old TriBeCa film fest movie theater?

  2. Probably died of old age. Those sheds are often left in place for years with no construction activity anywhere to be seen. A real blight on neighborhoods with narrow streets.

    • Dept of Bldgs shed permits are usually not signed off until the shed is removed. According to the DOB website, any shed up at 153-155 Hudson St was apparently in place without an active permit or a shed application that had not been signed off.

In fact, the PW7 form requesting signoff filed by a engineer who signed the form on 9/22/16 states “Sidewalk Shed has been removed.” That seems like a material misstatement of fact that is going to lead to some serious disciplinary and legal consequences.

      • The “shed” was not for 153-155 Hudson. It was next door at 151 Hudson. Our shed was indeed removed on 9/22/16.
