Seen & Heard: Frankly Wines Has a New Owner

••• A big change at Frankly Wines. Take it away, Christy Frank:

Somehow, it’s been nearly ten years since I opened Frankly Wines on a cold day in mid-December 2007. Fast forward through a third kid (baby was in a corner, literally), a stock market crash, a hurricane-induced blackout, a couple of blizzards, some very wild presidential elections and roughly 1000 tastings—well, it’s now time to pass the proverbial baton to a new team.

So if you’ve heard the rumors, they are indeed true—I’m selling the business and will be focusing my time on other projects, including my family’s other wine shop, Copake Wine Works, up in the Hudson Valley/Berkshires.

But you won’t be left high and dry—the new team at Frankly Wines will bring a similar passion for wine and service to the counter. Liz Nicholson, with the assistance of Conor McKee, will soon be your new favorite people. Liz comes to the world of wine retail after over a decade of experience running beverage programs in some of the city’s best restaurants, including Maialino, Marea, and the now closed ‘inoteca. Conor comes from Corkscrew Wines in Clinton Hill, and will oversee much of the behind the scenes work to fully support the shop through this new team’s transition.

••• The Five Boro Bike Tour rep who told Community Board 1’s Tribeca Committee that she’d come back to report on efforts to make it less noisy didn’t appear after all. Instead, she went to the CB1 Quality of Life Committee. I hear that the organizers have promised to only have three speakers, and no bands—but the emcees will still likely be yelling into the microphone. If you’re bothered this year (the ride is Sunday, May 7, and the yelling starts early in the morning), please call 311 and note the complaint number. UPDATE: A clarification from someone who was at the Quality of Life meeting: No bands, but there will be recorded music. Lower volume than in the past, they said. Also, it could be three speakers or three blocks (or one speaker per block). “The essential take-away is that if they don’t satisfy the neighborhood, however they do it, they will be met with serious resistance next year.”

••• B. has noticed a lot of work at the former New York Sports Club space (Greenwich and Reade). Back in December, a resident in the building said it’s going to be a preschool. Anyone know anything more? UPDATE: James poked around online and discovered that it’s part of Portland, Ore.–based KinderCare Education; the Department of Buildings say “daycare,” but I’ll see if I can find out more from the company.

••• Blue Ribbon Federal Grill has opened in FiDi. Here’s the menu.

••• And the Oyster Bar at the Roxy Hotel has opened. From a rep: “The raw bar, spearheaded by Roxy chef Julie Farias and restaurateur, Ray Pirkle, is open daily. The $1 Oyster Happy hour kicks off at 5 p.m. every day, and includes a beer and wine special. Partnering up with the happy hours will be DJ Turmix every Sunday, Gina Bon Jersey every Monday and Roxy’s resident pianist, Michael Garin Tuesday through Saturday.” The menu:

••• A report from a reader on the Worth Street reconstruction project: “I wanted to share pictures from Worth St and Lafayette St. They started on Thursday morning the next phase for the water main break and its been a nightmare. Traffic is more than ever congested. I have been a resident at 111 Worth Street for the last 8 years and its difficult to find a cab in front of the building or even park near the building. The city has been doing a poor job on directing the traffic. In the picture attached you see a public bus going the wrong way and SUV going towards the public bus. Both cars hit each other but luckily no was hurt.  Between the marches or protest on Foley Square and the construction its been a nightmare living on Worth Street. Love my apartment but  it’s time to move on.”

••• “Saw this listing for 415 Broadway today. Somewhat interesting is that Walgreens is looking to sublet the space. So Walgreen kept the master lease, is still paying rent, and simply moved out.” The asking rent is $849K per year. A. sent over a photo:

  2. 111 Worth St going to have a lot of empty apartments this year, still jacking the rental prices despite the war zone going on out front and back!
