Seen & Heard: Racist Artifacts for Sale on Greenwich Street

••• “I was shocked to see this stuff sprout up at the corner of Greenwich and Harrison today (Saturday Aug. 19),” reports J. “Some of it is racist: The plaques at the edge of the table in the pictures are signs for colored bathrooms, etc. Some guy is selling this tacky junk out of his car, spreading out down the street, cluttering the sidewalk in front of Dahlia’s restaurant. Can he do this? And in light of what’s been happening in this country, this is not only in really bad taste but potentially incendiary.” The question is less whether he’s allowed to sell merchandise that’s in poor taste than whether the city allows anyone to set up a table on the sidewalk. You could try calling 311 if he reappears. (Photos by David Lidsky.)

••• From Notify NYC: “Two aircraft, a Douglas DC-3 and a Beechcraft Bonanza A36TC, will fly by the George Washington Bridge, over the Hudson River, by the Verrazano Bridge, and around the Statue of Liberty [today]. The flyover will take approximately 45 minutes and will occur at 7 a.m. or 6 p.m. depending on weather conditions. The aircraft will fly at approximately 600-1,100 feet.” The weather was pretty  nice at 7 a.m., so this might have already happened.

••• Aaron Foldenauer, a candidate running for District 1 city council seat sent out a press release saying that “Incumbent City Council Member Margaret Chin failed to show up for the recording of a televised debate for the hotly contested City Council seat in Lower Manhattan. And challenger Christopher Marte was confronted with conclusive voting records from the Board of Elections showing that he never voted in his life until last year.”

••• Chef David Waltuck teaches a class at the Institute of Culinary Education tomorrow night; it’s focusing on seafood dishes he developed at Chanterelle: “You’ll be learning and dining on his signature Seafood Sausage; Oysters with Sauerkraut and Caviar; Seared Scallops with Duck Fat; and Grilled Spanish Mackerel with Clam Dashi Risotto, among others.”

••• The TV show “Gotham” is shooting in the W. Broadway/Reade area tomorrow.

••• Remember that big “Instinct” TV shoot last week? “They shot many scenes inside Gran Morsi, which will air on episode 3 (along with the other Tribeca scenes—Murray Street, World Trade Center, etc.),” reports a reader. “They are hoping the season would begin at the end of this year/early next year.”

  1. From NYC Consumer Affairs:

Who Must Have a General Vendor License?

You must have a General Vendor license if you sell, lease, or offer to sell or lease goods or services in a public place that is not a store.

You do NOT need a General Vendor license if:
You sell newspapers, periodicals, books, pamphlets, or other written matter.
You sell artwork, including paintings, photographs, prints, and sculptures.
You sell food. Note: Food vending requires a license from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Call 311 or visit nyc.gov/health for information about food cart vendor licenses and permits.
You sell items at a garage sale on private property.
You will only sell merchandise from a booth or stand at an authorized Street Fair (e.g., street fair, block party, or festival). Please note that you must obtain a Temporary Street Fair Vendor Permit to sell merchandise at an authorized Street Fair.

This description is only a general explanation of which individuals need to have a General Vendor license.

    Important Note about Eligibility

You can apply for a General Vendor license if the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) contacts you with a waiting list number. The maximum number of General Vendor licenses that DCA issues to non-veterans is limited by law to 853. DCA’s waiting list for non-veteran applicants is currently closed. The waiting list will not re-open for further registration until DCA has run through the current pool of non-veteran applicants.

Exception: If you are an honorably discharged veteran or the surviving spouse or domestic partner of an honorably discharged veteran and reside in New York State, you are eligible to apply for a General Vendor license.

  2. Erik, I was surprised to see that you quoted a statement from a press release sent out by Mr. Foldenauer. By printing a statement by just one candidate, it comes across as a possible endorsement of this candidate. I don’t think that was your intention. The District 1 City Council race is highly contested with three candidates going up against Margaret Chin, the current council member. I think you would better serve your readers, if you want to report on this race, if you sent out out a short questioner to the candidates covering issues that are important to Tribeca residents such as the homeless, noise issues, zoning and development, etc. that often come up in posts, and publish the answers in a special feature in the citizen.

    • I find it hard to believe that could be construed as an endorsement. (If I endorse someone, you’ll know it.) The questionnaire idea did occur to me, but as this press release is the sole instance of a candidate specifically reaching out to me, I can only deduce none of them are concerned about Tribeca issues

  3. Has anyone noticed how over the last few months just about all the long time employees at WHOLE FOODS Tribeca have disappeared?? I am sure some have quit…what about the rest? Does anyone know?
