Seen & Heard: Happy Lunar New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
To those of you born in 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995 or 2007, this is your year. Make it count. And don’t listen to what the dragon year people tell you. The pig is a symbol of optimism, enthusiasm and the value of hard work.

SING ALONG WITH MARY AND BERT
Can’t decide if this will be fun or torture: The Schimmel Center at Pace will host a sing-along screening of Mary Poppins – the 1964 version – at 4 on Sunday, Feb. 10. Tickets are $20. Pre-Screening activities begin at 3, which include games, prizes and a meet-and-greet with local actors playing Mary Poppins and Bert. This movie won five Academy Awards!! (It was a different era.)

  1. Apparently there will be many Lunar New Year events. The big annual parade will be on February 17, in Chinatown.

    Here’s a list:

  2. Of course the NY Times (and most mainstream news outlets) do not publicize the best part of Chinese New Year celebration — Super Saturday. There will be many free roaming lion dance troupes that wander the streets of the neighborhood. You can get up close and personal with them and see them perform. There will be nothing more authentic than this experience.
Much better than the parade which is a tourist trap if you ask me.
