In the News: A mini museum at 56 Leonard

THE URBAN HEDGE AT 56 LEONARD

If you’ve looked up at 56 Leonard to see this sculpture (in the lower left quadrant of the photo), AD provides a look inside the rest of the pad – owned by architect Lee Mindel and his partner, architectural designer Jose Marty. Thanks to J. for the tip. Ah to get in this place: there’s sculpture by Noguchi, Ai Weiwei, Joel Fischer, Donald Judd. The one above is a digitally fabricated screen by architect Marc Fornes that the owners called “an urban hedge.” What at first glance I thought was a pair of Barcaloungers in the living room is actually two vintage Alvar Aalto armchairs. Sweet.

MORE ON BPC PART DEUX
City Journal summarizes the mayor’s plan to fill in the Seaport: “The thing is, this scheme’s not crazy, and should it go forward, it would be only the most recent alteration of the shape of the island. Much of modern Manhattan is built on landfill. The process began around 1690, when the newly arrived English began heaving trash and other material into the harbor and building piers on the fill, and essentially ended when Battery Park City was constructed on earth and rock excavated from the original World Trade Center site and then deposited in the Hudson River. The result: an island whose outline only vaguely resembles the one Henry Hudson sailed past in 1609.”

A BARGAIN AT TWICE THE PRICE
Sheesh. Do I keep saying that? The Real Deal reports that the last penthouse in 443 Greenwich (at Vestry) just sold for $15 million – or $4,300 per square foot. What?

UES OR TRIBECA: YOU DECIDE
Curbed compared what $1.5M can buy in Tribeca vs. the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side, Dumbo, and Boerum Hill, and then polled its readers on their preference. The Upper East Side won with 28 percent of the vote for a three-bedroom on 62nd and First.
