As with Bazzini’s a few years ago, I think it’s hard not to pin this as an inevitable consequence of Whole Foods coming to Tribeca.

(Note: I’m out of town so I can’t wander over there. If anyone knows more about the closing, please feel free to weigh in.)

UPDATE: I hear from a reader that the Bell Bates folks sold the space to a school—which shouldn’t be a surprise, given the rest of Reade Street.

••• Apexart is one-upping that strip poker exhibit at Art in General from a couple years back with a Naturalist Day on May 25: “Everyone is welcome to join for all or part of the afternoon; nudity, however, is required. A changing area will be provided. Adults only.” There are also laughter workshops. RSVP by emailing rsvp@apexart.org.

••• From the LMCCC: “On May 22nd and 23rd, the New York City Department of Transportation will begin installing a new pedestrian plaza on Washington Street, between Albany and Carlisle Streets. The block-long plaza will close the roadway, replacing it with a painted gravel sidewalk, granite blocks, and decorative planters, as well as movable tables and chairs. The plaza is being created with the help of the Downtown Alliance, which will also install an information kiosk at the site.”

••• Ryan Kaplan of Imperial Development Group sent over a correction about 372 Broadway, one of the buildings in the Broadway’s Residential Boom post: “Susan Wires from Stribling will be marketing the project—not Halstead. I believe StreetEasy says that because the former owner had planned to use Halstead, but Streeteasy’s information is outdated. We will also not be calling the project Tribeca 372. We are using the building’s other address: 6 Cortlandt Alley.” We’ll know Broadway has really made it when people don’t find ways around using it: The Leonard, 93 Worth, Franklin Place….

••• 59 Franklin Street will soon be home to a somewhat unlikely business for this part of the world (but it’s no less welcome!), SYNLawn, makers of artificial turf. Thanks to Troy for the heads up and the photo.

••• “You’ve probably rubbed shoulders with people like John and Veronica, the wealthy couple at the heart of [Thea] Goodman’s first novel. Perhaps you’ve spotted them at Dean & DeLuca, contemplating brands of organic goat’s milk, or at Tribeca Paint, scrutinizing palettes of yellow before choosing ‘pollen’ for the baby’s nursery.” I get sneezy just thinking about it! “The toll of parenthood proves a terrible realization for John and Veronica, who find both their home and their circadian rhythms upturned by their 6-month-old daughter, Clara. One January weekend, John, a researcher for a successful hedge fund, spontaneously jets to Barbados with the baby, telling Veronica, only after their arrival, that he and Clara have gone to visit his mother in the suburbs. Is this a kidnapping? A betrayal? Or merely the act of a man wrecked by months of exhaustion that ‘seemed to calcify within him, then crack’?” —The New York Times

(I sure missed a Loft Peeping reference when I wrote about it.) Apparently, the “Today” show covered it, too. The increased publicity just erodes at the privacy even more, no?

••• Steven Harris Architects is handling the conversion of 7 Harrison: “The landmarked building, near [on, actually] Staple Street, will feature 10 three- and four-bedroom half-floor residences, as well as a townhouse unit with a private garden and a duplex penthouse with private outdoor space.” When Adam and I were looking for an architect to renovate our apartment, I left a long message at Harris’s office (it’s the nice-looking one on Chambers). Never heard back. Phone manners matter, baby. RH Gallery at 137 Duane just sent out an email saying that it has closed. (Actually, in more proof that I need to walk down Duane more often, it closed two weeks ago.) Here’s the somewhat ominous note—and not just because the subject line was “RH Gallery Final Communication”:

Dear Friends and Family of RH Gallery:

Two weeks ago, RH Gallery closed its doors to the public. The circumstances required that I act quickly. Though disruptive and unfortunate, terminating operations was the best available option.

I write with gratitude for your contributions over the last two-and-one-half years. In many ways, the gallery was a tremendous success. This would not have been possible without your patronage and support.

Sincerely,
Adam Taki

A reader pointed out that Related—the folks developing the new 10-story, 107-unit building going up at 460 Washington (where post-demolition work stared up the other day) has done a document dump at the Department of Buildings. I clicked on a bunch of links, decided there was nothing of interest, and bemoaned the lack of a rendering. To which the reader pointed out these (click to enlarge):

Thanks not only to this reader but to all readers who have been sending in tips—it makes my job easier, sure, but it also makes for a much better site. If you see something, email something to tribecacitizen@gmail.com or call/text me at 917-209-6473. (Do bear in mind that I won’t be able to tell who’s texting.)
