Lotus Blue, serving food inspired by China’s Yunnan Province, has opened in the Reade Street space that was formerly Nam. In many ways, fans of Nam will feel at home. Yunnan cuisine includes many traditional Southeast Asian ingredients, such as basil, mint, cilantro, banana leaf, and ginger—so when you see it touted as “Modern Chinese Cooking,” don’t go expecting an updated version of General Tso’s chicken. The back area is now more of a bar, raised about six inches off the floor. Cocktails might be infused with spices and savory flavors such as chili and Szechuan peppercorns. The dining room is dominated by red walls and a painting of a lotus blossom.
Had an excellent and unusual meal here last week. Lots of options for vegetarians. The smoked tofu was delicious. The match-stick fries could become an addiction.
This is a great place to get a light lunch, and the ingredients are obviously high quality, but the cuisine is as confused as the music. Like its location and name, the restaurant seems to want to say that they are Chinese, but not grungy and loud like the restaurants in Chinatown. On the other hand, they want to be affordable and authentic unlike Mr. Chow’s….
