Because everybody loves a bargain: This is a special newsletter devoted to sales, deals, and discounts in greater Tribeca, with descriptions written by the sponsors. As always, click on the blue text for more information. Remember to tell them where you saw the deal!

CASS LILIEN
Personalized, engraved sterling silver or 14k gold stacking rings with diamonds are the perfect gift for all the proud moms in your life. The combinations are endless: The one pictured was for my favorite stylish grandma, but I can even make them with the names of your pets. This is the ultimate gift for dog lovers. Treat yourself or buy one for someone you love (and Tribeca Citizens get 10% off). Great for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Come into the shop at 24 Harrison and see what’s new or order online at casslilien.com.

This charming, windowed gem is known for items like “arancini” (rice balls), “cauliflower fritti” (fried cauliflower), and “pane panelle sliders” (fried chickpea with ricotta and caciocavallo cheese—voted the #2 sandwich by New York magazine). The wine list features Southern Italian vintages by the bottle or quartino. Stop in for a three-course prix-fixe lunch Monday–Friday or weekend brunch for $19.95. And don’t miss Tribeca’s most adored hot chocolate—made with Nutella and topped with homemade amaro marshmallows and cream.

EUPHORIA SPA
• My theory with gifts for spa lovers is that you’re best off with gift certificates, because if you get specific, you could end up offending: “I thought you’d like a massage” might sound more like “Why are you so tense?” Sixty-minute massages start at $120.
• That said, opening a gift certificate can be a little anti-climactical, so pair it with a custom-blend Euphoria candle ($22), Me Time bath salts with pomegranate infusion and seaweed extract ($18), and/or Lip Slippers balm ($15).

• Stacking name rings are a lovely way to remember your children’s names when you’re baked commemorate the ones you love. Silver rings are $150, 14-karat-gold ones are $300, and each name or diamond is $25 more.
• Cass’s Jewelry Making Kits come in two types: The one pictured is for younger girls, while the other is better for teenagers ($38 each). Both have freshwater pearls and semi-precious stones.

• Patchwork stuffed animals by Nook-Nook (owl, $46).

Tania Anthony of Resale-Riches, an online consignment boutique, shows us around her Tribeca—including the discount stores she can't resist, who she goes to for jewelry repairs, and the "inconspicuous" restaurant she visits for special occasions.

Tania Anthony has always loved shopping, but after working at a medical software company, she managed to turn it into a business: Resale-Riches, an online consignment boutique. “When my entire department was laid off in 2002, I started dabbling in finding and reselling vintage and couture pieces,” she says. “I know whenever I get my hands on something good, people will be e-mailing me for months—even long after the item has sold.” Originally from the Ukraine, she grew up in Brooklyn and now lives in Tribeca with her daughters, Rebecca and Leah. (Portrait courtesy Tania Anthony.)

How long have you lived in the area?
I moved here from Park Slope in 1993.

Which restaurants do you frequent most often?
It used to be Petite Abeille when my kids were younger—it was always so kid-friendly, and the mussels and fries were always a hit with my girls. But for some reason, lately it’s been mostly Dean’s, perhaps because it’s across the street, but also my daughter Leah can eat their square pizza 24/7. And we go to Jerry’s fairly regularly.

Capri Caffé by Melissa Hom (courtesy Grub Street)

Which restaurants do you tend to go to for special occasions?
Capri Caffé on Church Street. It’s completely inconspicuous, but the food is delish, and very reasonable, plus the owners are incredibly welcoming.

Where do you order in (or get take-out) from? Are there dishes you always order?
Gigino and Tokyo Bay, at least three times a week. The Sashimi Regular and shrimp tempura roll from Tokyo Bay and the Gigino pizza.

Lot-Less on Chambers

Which shops do you find it hard to resist popping into when you pass by?
Bell Bates, always. I also seem to have a hard time resisting the two Lot-Less stores, and Kings Pharmacy.

What was the last non-essential item you bought in Tribeca or BPC?
Something silly from the Balloon Saloon, I’m sure. I often get birthday gifts there, and I usually end up with some impulse purchase for Leah, my younger daughter.

Are there any services (salon, fitness, etc.) that you’re particularly glad are in the neighborhood?
Cass Lilian’s jewelry shop, Window 24, on Harrison—not only do I love Cass’s beautiful pieces, but she’s a master at jewelry repairs. She can fix just about anything!

What’s the area’s best-kept secret?
Tribeca Tarot Reader Liat Silberman, and the styling and closet/wardrobe organizing service, Cameo Closets. Oh, and the guy at the corner of Canal and Greenwich who sells used junk (I think only on weekends). I recently discovered him, but when I inquired, I was told he’s been there for years.

Where do you always take out-of-towners?
Hudson River Park, without fail. And Bubby’s.

171 Duane

Which neighborhood building do you wish you lived in and/or owned?
The ground floor of 171 Duane, where Tribeca Girls was. That would be the ideal live/work scenario for me.

What’s your favorite part of the area (street, park, whatever)?
All the cobblestone streets, and I have a special place in my heart for Staple Street.

Your most memorable celebrity sighting?
Seeing Mayor Bloomberg on Greenwich after meeting a certain Erik Torkells for coffee.

If you could change one thing about the neighborhood, what would it be?
I would change the street parking zoning in northern Tribeca to residential.

Washington Market Park

What’s changed around here that you like? That you don’t?
I really like the Washington Market Park renovations, and I think once Pier 25 is ready it’ll be great. But I still miss Socrates, and I’m not a fan of the ever-expanding construction in BPC that’s shrinking the ballfield. The field was double the size when my kids first started Downtown Soccer League.

What’s your best Tribeca story?
When a taxi driver decided he needed to educate me about the fact that it’s not Moore Street, but North Moore Street, as he was making the left on Varick. I told him I already knew that?!?!

Any questions you wish you’d been asked?
Yes, if there’s anything I feel is missing in the neighborhood. We could use a good vegetarian/raw food restaurant or two. And Tribeca needs a good Chinese restaurant. It’s very frustrating not to have one, and I don’t care if Chinatown is down the block. OK, I’ll get off my soapbox and go back to ordering from Grand Sichuan.

And that's just 10 days away—so pay attention to this neighborhood gift guide.

I’ll never forget the year my dad bought my mom a new vacuum cleaner for Mother’s Day—it taught me, and presumably my dad, that Mother’s Day gifts should be (a) indulgent, and (b) for the mother, not the family. I think those are good general rules no matter how old your mother is, but for this year’s Mother’s Day gift guide I’ve tried to help out the dads who need to buy gifts on behalf of their kids (or supplement their kids’ gifts with something the mom might actually want). Because I’m not a mother—even if my pug is a lot like a perpetual two-year-old—I asked the Tribeca Citizen community for input. In no particular order:

••• You can’t go wrong with a spa treatment; if you want to specify a treatment—and I’m not sure you should—stick with facials and massages. (This is so not the time to surprise her with the Botox she’s been wondering aloud about.) Several mothers suggested Euphoria Spa, and another mother said she’s heard that Jeff, a new massage therapist at Equinox, is superb.

••• Jessica at Petticoat Lane points out that buying lingerie for someone else can be tricky—you could be sending the wrong message, like you wish she’d try a little harder to be sexy or you just assumed she needed a size-large thong. “Pajamas are better because they’re pretty-sexy, not slutty,” she says, “and you don’t have to buy by size.” (When she says “pajamas,” she means nighties like the ones above, which cost around $90.) Another good option is a clutch: “Women can be picky about their everyday bags. Clutches are easier. The funkier ones aren’t for everyday so there isn’t so much pressure for one to be perfect. And you can never have enough clutches.” The clutches at Petticoat Lane cost $150–$250.

••• This is an edgier idea, but if she complains that she’s not as sexy as she used to be, prove her wrong with help from Tribeca photographer Burke Heffner, who takes pin-up portraits. (What is it about the name Hefner/Heffner?) For $299, she’ll get two hours of studio time, with attention from a professional make-up artist, props, a disk of photos, and one 8″-by-12″ print.

••• The great thing about buying Cass Lilien‘s jewelry as a gift, says Cass Lilien, is that if something isn’t exactly to the recipient’s taste, “we can swap in a different stone, size it, or adapt it.” She’s currently excited about the bracelets above, made with sterling silver and semi-precious stones; they can be worn individually or joined end-to-end to form a necklace. One is $125, two are $200, and three are $250.

••• Several mothers said they’d love to be taken out for a nice lunch or dinner, “but not on Mother’s Day,” said one, and not with the kids (no one explicitly said so, but let’s just take it for granted). If my poll is any indication, you can’t go wrong at Locanda Verde (above) or Bouley. if it’s lunch, she might have a little wine, so be prepared to take care of the kids afterward; nothing harshes the buzz like having to parent.

One mother suggested that she’d like a summer dress ($150–$175) from Capucine, but to most dads, that won’t mean much of anything. Not to worry: Men come in all the time with only a vague idea, says Capucine, and they’re happy to help figure it out: “Look at what she wears. Is she bohemian? Does she like more of classic style? What does she tend to wear—straight, long, simple?” As for finding the right size, “You can always say, ‘she’s a little bustier than you, a little taller, whatever.’” Over at Otte, they tend to suggest men buy jewelry—such as the $335 hand-crocheted mixed-metal necklace above—”unless he knows that she wants a brand like Alexander Wang or Helmut Lang.” Finally, there’s shoe palace Edon Manor. These are shoes as worship objects; either you know going in that she likes shoes such as these—they average $700—or you shouldn’t bother going in at all. (Whether she ever wears them is not the point.)

••• There’s something to be said for a gift that the kids can appreciate, too—not that they can use it, but that they can see why Mom might want it. Adeline Adeline, the new stylish-bike shop on Reade, can help you pick out a bike that’ll look as good as it rides. “We’d probably suggest the Pashley Poppy,” says Julie Hirschfeld; it costs $995 and and is not pictured above. Or if she already has a bike, consider a chic basket—and maybe a guaranteed hour every weekend when she can take a ride on her own.

••• A little chocolate—perhaps one or ten dark-chocolate Nutella candy bars from Tribeca Treats—makes every gift go over better. (If you do buy that chic bike basket from Adeline Adeline, she’s pretty much guaranteed to look inside it.) I suppose most people would buy truffles as a gift, but I kind of wanted an excuse to pick up a Nutella bar….

If you’re thinking of doing some spring cleaning—and you might as well, what with rain forecast from Friday to Monday—consider getting rid of some of that fabulous clothing that you never wear anymore. No, don’t just get rid of it: Put it to work.

Yesterday, I watched as Tania Anthony (right), founder of the online consignment shop Resale-Riches, met with a potential client. (She visits the homes of people with a lot of good stuff to sell, but to make life easier, she has begun holding “office hours” for people with only an item or two at locations around Tribeca. Yesterday’s was at Cass Lilien‘s jewelry shop at 24 Harrison.) The item in question was a Louis Vuitton garment bag. Its owner had done her homework: She researched when it was probably made (late 70s, maybe early 80s), what similar items go for on eBay ($850), and what a new model costs ($2,300).

They pored over the bag, admiring its details and discussing whether it could be a sophisticated fake. Anthony will do more research when she gets home—to verify its authenticity, and also to determine what an appropriate price would be. Anthony’s commission depends on what the item ends up selling for: Anything under $249 earns the seller 60 percent of the price; $250–$499 earns 65 percent; $500–$999 earns 70 percent; and anything $1,000 and up gets the seller 80 percent. (The bag’s owner said she’s hoping to sell it for $1,000, which Anthony later told me seemed about right, at least from her first impression.) The seller must agree to leave it online for 120 days, after which he or she can take it back at any time.

Eight hundred bucks for a bag you never use? With that kind of money, you can hire someone to do the rest of your spring cleaning.

Tania Anthony is at Cass Lilien’s on Tuesdays and Alycea Ungaro’s Real Pilates on Mondays and Fridays; consultations are by appointment only. If your closet is a trove of amazing merch, get in touch with her via resale-riches.com and she’ll arrange a time to swing by.
