••• Tribeca is well represented in New York Magazine’s Best of New York issue: “Best Deli Plate” (Kutsher’s Tribeca), “Best Cocktail Bar” (Silver Lining), “Best Jazz Show” (“The Checkout” at 92YTribeca), “Best Chawanmushi” (Brushstroke), “Best Kiddie Gym” (eXerBlast), “Best Teen Hangout” (7eventytwo—or is it 72?—at the Church Street School for Music and Art), “Teaching Centers” (Downtown Dance Factory), “Dresses (Office)” (Annelore), and “Best Used Kids Furniture” (Recrib, which was founded by Tribecans). But then there’s this: “Erase those clichés from your mind with a visit to Boerum Hill’s Flavor Paper, whose products line the Tribeca Steve Madden boutique and the upcoming Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg.” Italics mine: Broadway between Prince and Spring is pretty squarely Soho. Also, Il Matto was listed for best martini, even though the restaurant has been White & Church for a while now. When I read the print version I’ll probably find more—the online version is a bit of a jumble.

••• UPDATE: I missed a few—Best Hybrid Workout (Bari Studio), Best Downscale Beauty Mecca (Duane Reade Wall Street), Best One-Stop Family Fun (Pier 25).

••• The New Yorker has a short story by Donald Antrim that’s set at a book party in Tribeca. Or at least that’s what the magazine’s fiction-related Twitter feed said; I don’t have access to The New Yorker’s website. I probably could because I subscribe to the print version, but do I really need to not read The New Yorker twice a week? Anyway, you can read a Q&A with Antrim about it.

••• The Ambrose ship returned to the Seaport Museum after getting repairs. —CBS New York

••• Related? “Grub Street learns that South Street Seaport hang Yankee Clipper seems to have closed; according to Amodeo Auctions, the premises are to be demolished. A call to the restaurant-bar finds the number disconnected. So get down there and grab those flat-screen TVs if you’re in the market.” [Note: See comments for why the number is disconnected.]

••• Downtown Dance Factory has a new teacher—Ashley Rich, whom you might recognize from TV: “Many people will know her as a finalist in the most recent season of the Fox TV hit, ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ Ashley’s moving from LA and her first NYC job is with Downtown Dance Factory, teaching some of our ballet & jazz/hip hop classes.”

••• Blue Smoke is on track to open “in some capacity” this week, “but may not be serving food at that time.” (That means it’ll be serving drinks and bar snacks.) Actually, for all I know, it opened yesterday. If you walk by and see anything, let me know at tribecacitizen@gmail.com. North End Grill, meanwhile, should follow in a week or two. UPDATE: Reader Hudson River popped by and reports that Blue Smoke isn’t open yet, but Beans and Greens is, next to the movie theater: “It’s one of those salad bars where they do it for you, with some muffins and pastries. Very nice, cheery interior.”

••• Ed “Burnsie” Burns’s latest film, Newlyweds, is now available on DVD and as a download. Judging from the trailer—I haven’t grown comfortable with paying $15 for a download yet—it’s possibly the Tribeckiest movie ever made.

Peter Hannert is a photographer who turned to retouching, and whose company, Stella Digital, is based on W. Broadway. Take a look at the portfolio on Stella’s site, and you’ll see that Hannert has had a hand in many well-known fashion and advertising images. (Also: The reader who suggested I contact him sent over this interesting interview.) The portrait is by Adam Sternin—and Hannert swears he didn’t do any work on it.

The rules: Participants can choose which of 40-odd questions they’d like to answer, but they have to answer numbers one through four (and at least 12 total).

1. How long have you lived in the area? Where did you move from? Where are you originally from? Originally from Michigan. Moved to New York 24 Years ago. Stella Digital’s office has been in Tribeca for the last 9 years. I moved down to Tribeca from NoHo two years ago so I could walk to work.

2. Married? Partnered? If so, what’s his/her name and occupation? Not married.

3. Kids? Pets? Two girls, 8 and 4 years old.

4. Where do you live? BPC—great for kids!

5. The best deal around: Not really Tribeca but close—Staten Island ferry! Great to get out on the water—get someone you like to be with, good sushi and some beer and take a sunset cruise past the the Statue of Liberty, etc. then come back to NYC. Nice ride and it’s free. (I haven’t done this since college but I remember it being fun.)

6. My most-frequented restaurants: Nobody takes better care of me than the Odeon. I also like Marc Forgione, Greenwich Grill, Blaue Gans, the Harrison….

7. For special occasions, I go to: Marc Forgione is good—but then so is that Palm at Walker’s [see #10]….

8. Best sandwich: Columbine [now Café Clementine], Grandaisy Bakery, and Mangez Avec Moi all make good sandwiches—but one of the best sandwiches on the earth is the BLT at the Odeon.

10. Most delicious cocktail: The Russian Caravan at Brandy Library is really good but that place is a bit stuffy—there are also good cocktails at Smith & Mills. The best might be a cold Palm beer poured by my friend John at Walker’s.

16. How I stay fit: I used to go to Peter Anthony. It’s really a great place to get in shape! I just got too busy to make it there. If I find some more time I’ll definitely go back.

17. Where I get beautiful: Well, I do own a retouching company….

18. What’s the area’s best-kept secret? Wouldn’t be a secret if we told….

20. A worthy splurge: Wine! Chambers Street Wines and Tribeca Wine Merchants [left] are great.

21. A recent case of sticker shock: [Please avoid real estate.] The frickin’ parking garage. It’s a little annoying to pay a small rent to park one’s car.

23. Rainy-day activity: Swimming with the kids at the Downtown Community Center!

25. Kids’ classes you’d recommend: Downtown Dance Factory is great!

33. If money were no object, I’d…. I have a friend (and Tribecan) involved with an amazing charity called Edible School Yard. I would like to see all the schools here put gardens in like they’ve done at P.S. 216. If money were no object, I’d make it happen.

39. If I could change one thing about the neighborhood: Tribeca could really use a great Mexican place. I won’t name the one or two we have but let’s just say, they’re not up to par.”

45. If I couldn’t live here, I’d live in…. Argentina.

If you’d like to do the TCQ&A—or you want to recommend someone—email tribecacitizen@gmail.com.

At Tribeca's first comprehensive dance center, Downtown Dance Factory, your child can choose from a variety of dance styles, ballet to tap to hip hop. But don't drag your feet! The semester begins next Friday and classes are filling up.

The first step to enjoying dance is determining which style is right for you. The second step is finding someone to teach you. Tribeca’s first comprehensive dance center, Downtown Dance Factory has a full-floor studio complex at 291 Broadway (at Reade) where your child can choose from a wide variety of dance styles, ballet to tap to hip hop. The full menu is below. But don’t drag your feet! The semester begins next Friday, September 16, and classes are filling up. Register here or by calling 212-962-1800.

••••••••••••••••••••

BALLET
Headed up by former New York City Ballet ballerina Jessica Flynn, the ballet program starts with KindiBallet classes for 3-and-4-year-olds and progresses through to 4th graders. Strong technique is encouraged—this is ballet, after all—but within a creative and encouraging environment.

••••••••••••••••••••

JAZZ / HIP HOP FUSION
If your child dreams of dancing her way onto MTV, this is the class. Combining technical aspects of jazz dance with modern hip hop elements, it explores the style of dance used in present-day video clips, movies, and on dance floors everywhere—within the bounds of what’s age-appropriate! There’s also KindiHop! for preschoolers and the edgier street hip hop for pre-teens and teens.

•••••••••••••••••••

LYRICAL
DDF added this modern/interpretive dance style to its program just last year, but after the class’s beautiful recital performance, demand has soared: The program has quadrupled, giving students from 2nd through 6th grade the opportunity to express themselves.

••••••••••••••••••

TADA! MUSICAL THEATER
DDF is thrilled to offer musical theater classes again this year, run by the award-winning Tada! Youth Theater group. Expect lots of fun singing, dancing, and acting, culminating with a semester-end presentation.

••••••••••••••••••

BOYS PROGRAM
With five sons between them, DDF’s co-founders were adamant that a boys program be an integral part of the offerings. The all-boy classes see close to 100 boys come through the doors of DDF each week. Hip hop, breakdancing, funk—these boys rock.

•••••••••••••••••••

TAP
Tap is also a relatively new dance style at DDF, and they can hardly keep up with demand. With KindiCombo (ballet/tap combination) classes for preschoolers and tap for big kids too, it’s a great way to discover your inner rhythm—and make a great big noise!

•••••••••••••••••••

TUTU TOTS
DDF’s youngest dancers are the two-year-old TutuTotters. Students and their caregivers are exposed to a “tasting menu” of dance styles—ballet, jazz/hip hop, creative movement, fun dance-based games, and most importantly, a large dose of imagination!

On May 22, nearly 2,000 people came to watch—and applaud—as more than 500 Downtown Dance Factory performers danced their hearts out. It was a spectacular afternoon, as you can see from Anna Palma’s photos!

With a four-studio complex at Broadway and Reade, Downtown Dance Factory has dance classes for ages two through teen, in ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap, all-boys, and lyrical. DDF also offers musical-theater classes (in partnership with TADA! Youth Theater) and awesome birthday parties.
Michelle and Daniel Lehmann, founders of the new online marketplace reCrib, share their Tribeca favorites—from coffee-snob-worthy cafés to who makes the best Bloody Marys.

After closing Clio, their much-loved Soho housewares shop, Michelle and Daniel Lehmann picked up and moved to Tribeca—and promptly launched a new business, reCrib.com. It’s a national online marketplace for used (but high-end) kids’ and babies’ gear and clothing. “As our kids outgrew their strollers and cribs, we looked for the go-to site to buy and sell stuff like that, and we were surprised to learn it didn’t exist,” says Daniel. “So we created reCrib.” Listings are currently free—making this weekend an ideal time to do some spring cleaning (and perhaps recoup some of your costs)….

How long have you lived in the area?
We moved to Tribeca from Soho three months ago, and now can’t imagine living anywhere else. Ah, the peace and quiet and neighborhood feel—we love it!

Locanda Verde's Nero cookie

Which restaurants do you frequent most often?
We’re huge fans of Locanda Verde—love the pastas, sheep’s milk ricotta crostini, and lamb meatball sliders—plus Karen DeMasco’s desserts are ridiculously good. Landmarc is so great and easy for brunch—perfect with the kiddies and they serve the best Bloody Marys. Terroir always feels like a good night out and you can always find an exciting new wine that you haven’t tried before, not to mention their delish small plates of food.

Where do you order in (or get take-out) from? Are there dishes you always order?
We tend to cook a lot but if we do order in: Bread (the chicken Milanese is so good and it’s one of the best values in town) and Dean’s (for pizza and we always order the salad with lentils and grilled chicken for a healthier alternative). And if we’re feeling indulgent, we’ll pick up sushi from Nobu.

Which shops do you find it hard to resist popping into when you pass by?
Steven Alan—we both feel like we could buy the whole store. Daniel’s entire closet is literally filled with the men’s shirts in every pattern you can imagine. Plus, the sample sale is a not-to-be-missed event. My kids can’t pass by Billy’s Bakery without buying a cupcake—and we always sneak in a banana pudding to our order.

What was the last non-essential item you bought in Tribeca?
A bright pink bike for our daughter at Metro Bicycles (right).

Are there any services (salon, fitness, etc.) that you’re particularly glad are in the neighborhood?
SoulCycle, the best 45-minute workout available.

What’s the area’s best-kept secret?
Smith & Mills, a fab bar on N. Moore with no sign and killer cocktails. Bit’z Kids has the best skinny, stretchy jeans for little girls that are really well priced. And you may think of Moomah as a place to bring the kids, but it also serves Counter Culture coffee—we’re huge coffee snobs and that is some of the best in the city.

Where do you always take out-of-towners?
On a bike ride along the river, with a pit stop at Pier 25, our kids’ favorite playground.

What’s your favorite part of the area (street, park, whatever)?
Coming from Soho, which was always so noisy and crowded, we love how quiet and residential Northern Tribeca feels. It still has so much of the neighborhood’s original character, with its old loft buildings, signage and cobblestone streets. We feel really fortunate to live in that part of the hood.

Your most memorable celebrity sighting?
Beyoncé isn’t bad.

If you could change one thing about the neighborhood, what would it be?
Less wind.

Downtown Dance Factory by Angela Weir (angelaweirphotography.com)

Any questions you wish you’d been asked?
Other favorite spots? Downtown Dance Factory—awesome ballet and hip-hop classes for kids, really nice people who run it, and a cool, mod space. Saturday mornings at Downtown Community Center—swimming, pottery, pinball machines, and basketball—need we say more?! Kaffe 1668—in addition to excellent coffee from Stumptown and Counter Culture, it’s a really good spot for working away from home or the office. Try the housemade sandwiches and chocolate-chip cookies.

Our extended summer program teaches children a language (Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, or German) through arts, movement, and music. Activities range from practicing traditional dances and songs to choosing a historical moment and performing a skit in the target language. Children will receive a hands-on education about artistic contributions made by their country of focus by creating similar works of their own! Our activities integrate traditions of the world as a means to encourage the student’s multicultural awareness.
