"We call it the 10 p.m. club," says jewelry designer Walt Chefitz. "Around 10 p.m. anyone available meets up for a quick nightcap and debrief on the day. It’s a wonderful way to wind down and catch up."

The rules: Answer as many of the 47 questions as you like (but a minimum of 15, and you must answer #1–4). Please limit most answers to the general geographic area.

1. How long have you lived in the area? Where did you move from? Where are you originally from? I grew up in Miami. I moved to Tribeca eight years ago from Los Angeles. I spent seven years there, first developing software and then launching a start-up of my own. I discovered that software was not my passion. I found my passion at night school—metalsmithing and designing jewelry. With a small portfolio and several interviews I landed a job in Tribeca working for David Yurman. David’s office is on Vestry Street. I found a home within walking distance, closed my software company and moved across the country to start a new career.

2. Married? Partnered? If so, what’s his/her name and occupation? My girlfriend, Adena, is a tropical fruit farmer, chef and has a stand at a farmer’s market in Miami every weekend. This means I am traveling a lot, but always have a substantial supply of sapodilla, canistel, mamay, and sweetheart lychees—whatever might be in season.

3. Kids? Pets? None, yet.

4. Where do you live? I live on Murray, between Church and West Broadway.

5. What do you do for a living? I’m a jewelry designer and entrepreneur. I launched my own jewelry line last year named for my grandfather, Walt Adler. [Left: A Walt Adler dome ring.]

6. Most-frequented restaurants: I usually have three or four in rotation. Right now Tiny’s has the best kale salad and meatballs. Blaue Gans serves the fastest dinner in the hood—seriously fast: time them. I love everything at Tamarind—I prefer to sit at the bar, so it feel less like a hotel lobby, and let them order for you. The gefilte fish at Kutsher’s is kick ass—ask for some extra horseradish. The burger at Smith & Mills is decadent and great late night. I still miss Bouley Upstairs almost every day. It was my neighborhood Cheers.

7. For special occasions, I go to: The big Bouley. There simply isn’t any competition. Their attention to detail is beyond ordinary. Go for lunch, it’s the best deal in town and can easily go over three hours. Don’t schedule anything else for the rest of the day.

8. The best deal around: The smoked fish [right] from the Blue Moon Fish stand at the Saturday farmer’s market. For a couple bucks you get an amazing breakfast.

9. Best sandwich: Does open face count? The tomato and egg bruschetta at Terroir is to die for. The bread is crispy, but you can still cut it. The egg whites are mixed into the tomatoes creating a tartare-like texture and the yolk makes it rich and creamy. That and a hoppy beer will suffice for dinner many nights.

10. Sweet-tooth satisfaction: …a chocolate malted shake at the Cosmopolitan Café. By the way, there’s a secret back room and they serve wine.

11. Most delicious cocktail: The Bourbon Bramble at Weather Up is perfection. They have the best ice in the neighborhood. I call it a bourbon snow cone. It’s the only drink that can last a good 30 minutes getting better as the ice gets slushy and the blackberries disintegrate. I don’t think it’s on the menu.

12. I usually order in from , and I always order the . I rarely order in, unless I’m sick—and then it’s the best pho I can find.

13. I can’t resist popping into: Kaffe 1668 in the mornings for a coffee.

14. The last non-essential item I bought: a red watch band.

15. When I walk into my apartment, the first thing I see that I bought around here is: A purple Dyson vacuum cleaner. Well, I actually didn’t buy it. I found on trash day in front of my building. It was missing a piece which Dyson sent me for free. People throw out some amazing things in the neighborhood.

16. I’m so glad good friends live in the neighborhood, because without them I’d have to leave Tribeca. We call it the 10pm club…. Around 10 p.m. anyone available meets up for a quick nightcap and debrief on the day. It’s a wonderful way to wind down and catch up.

17. How I stay fit: On nice weekends, I ride my bicycle out to Nyack. I take a bunch of spin and yoga classes at Equinox every week. I’ve recently started running along west side highway during lunch. It’s a perfect break in the day to reset.

19. What’s the area’s best-kept secret? Sarabeth’s [left] gives away their leftover pastries around 10 p.m. if you’re at the bar.

27. I’ve never been to the miniature golf or volleyball courts on Pier 25 and I don’t know why.

29. How does MaryAnn’s stay in business?

33. Pet peeve: Delivery guys on electric bikes riding against traffic.

35. A doctor I’d recommend: Tribeca Dental.

36. My most memorable celebrity sighting: I am horrible at recognizing celebrities.

39. Tribeca could use more specialty grocers and fewer jackhammers and barricades.

41: A business I’d like to have here: I’d love to open my own jewelry salon and design studio.

42: My best Tribeca story: 178 years ago Martin Guitars was founded on the corner of Vestry and Hudson, where the 200 Hudson building now stands. Nicole Bartelme had an idea for a commemorative plaque and asked David Yurman, whose office occupies the top floors, if he would create the plaque. Besides jewelry projects, I always got the odd jobs, so this one landed on my desk. This one was different than usual. It was for the community—my community. I set out to design something meaningful. We chose two of their most iconic guitars and used their motifs for the background. The details were imperative to the Martin family. When we sent them the design proof, they said the pattern was the wrong wood grain. Now the background is rose wood like their guitars. Nicole’s vision is to have several plaques throughout the neighborhood, much like the Freedom Trail in Boston. I think it would be a wonderful addition to the area. I see people stop to read the plaque all the time.

43. The best Tribeca story I won’t tell: A couple years ago I lost some books, and it pains me to relive the story. A friend lent me several irreplaceable books (about Tribeca!) and I left the bag in Ward III. I put up a hundred posters in the area. We never found the books :(

44. Someone who lives here who I really think you should meet: Brooke. She’s in the 10 p.m. club.

45. Proof that change is good: When I moved here, my subway entrance was closed on the weekends.

46. If I couldn’t live here, I’d live in…. New Orleans.

I heard it for the first time last night—and caught it on video. If you close your eyes it's sort of like the "Dream House" exhibit over on Church....

I was at home last night when a car alarm began honking and honking and honking, continuing for at least 10 minutes. On the verge of losing (more of?) my mind, I headed out for a drink before Adeline Adeline‘s party celebrating the arrival of Bobbin Bicycles from the U.K. (They’re cute.) Naturally, as soon as I got outside, the honking stopped. I wandered around, trying to decide where to go by myself on a Thursday night, when I found myself at Hudson and Worth. Holy cow! I had long heard about complaints about the noise coming from 60 Hudson (the old Western Union building), but I had never heard it myself. It was an insanely loud drone, audible for blocks. I took this short video—sorry, I forgot that I shouldn’t shoot vertically because I can’t rotate it later—and it definitely comes through over the traffic and ambient noise. Then I headed up to Tamarind, where the drone even seeped into the civilized bar area.

Here’s some background on the issue, and a link to Neighbors Against Noise, a community group, including how to make a complaint.

The TCQ&A rules: You can choose which of 45 questions you’d like to answer, but you have to answer #1–4 (and at least 15 total). Portrait by Aaron Pachesa (courtesy Joya Dass).

1. How long have you lived in the area? Where did you move from? Where are you originally from? I’m born to parents who emigrated to the U.S. from India in 1969, which makes me first-generation. They settled in Central Pennsylvania, which was home to some 4,000 Indian families over the years. Got my M.A. in journalism from Boston University and moved to New York City for an internship with “NBC Nightly News,” and haven’t left. That was 1997.

2. Married? Partnered? If so, what’s his/her name and occupation? Single but dating someone exclusively.

3. Kids? Pets? No kids or pets but I hope to have two kids and a little terrier.

4. Where do you live? For the 15 years I’ve lived here, I’ve lived uptown, but worked downtown. As a business news reporter, I’m generally ”live” from Wall Street. Now I’m spending even more of my waking (and sleeping!) hours in Tribeca because I’m dating a gentleman who owns two businesses on Beach Street. Tribeca and the Financial District are my home away from home.

5. What do you do for a living? I am a business news anchor by trade. For four years, New Yorkers knew me from the morning news on “Channel 7 Eyewitness News.” (Someone once wrote me on my Facebook page that they named their kid after me because they watched every morning through their pregnancy.) Now I deliver the hourly reports on the markets from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange for NY1 on a freelance basis. I also host a popular Saturday-morning show called “AVS” on WMBC that centers on all the music, food, and fashion of the Indian community. In the last two years, I took a team to India and shot and directed my first documentary. First Sight is about curable blindness in children. I was lucky to have an experienced New York team to help bring it into the finish line. It features beautiful cinematography by Marcelo Bukin and fresh new music by Sivamani and Falu, who is a regular on the New York music scene. The next screening is March 22 at the Tribeca Screening Room in Tribeca Film Center. You can watch the trailer at firstsightthefilm.com.

6. The best deal around: Hands down, the best deal is happy hour at Flor De Sol: $3 tapas specials and $6 drinks from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. I taste-test tortilla española at every Spanish restaurant I visit. Flor de Sol’s is very potato-y, which is a good thing.

7. Most-frequented restaurants: This is always a tough question to ask a gal like me, who practically eats out as a second job. I love Gigino Trattoria for Italian, especially in warm weather when the doors are open to the sidewalk. La Ripaille for French. Flor de Sol for Spanish tapas.

8. For special occasions, I go to: River Café in Brooklyn for Valentine’s Day was magical. But definitely L’Ecole, the restaurant arm of the French Culinary Institute. They have condensed their prix-fixe menu from five courses to about three now. But with the wine pairing, it’s the most exquisite meal. A dynamic menu prepared by the students, and it promises not to break the bank.

9. Best sandwich: The shrimp fajita wrap on a tomato tortilla with alfalfa sprouts from Beach Street Eatery.

10. Sweet-tooth satisfaction: Run, don’t walk to try the smores soufflé at One if by Land, Two if by Sea. And the banana tart with malted chocolate pecan ice cream at Tribeca Grill. My poor date didn’t even get a bite.

11. Most delicious cocktail: Mango cosmopolitan at Tamarind Tribeca. A mango lassi with a kick for this little Indian.

13. I can’t resist popping into: Bubby’s for wild Maine blueberry pancakes at 2 a.m. But given my profession and metabolism, I try very hard not to.

15. When I walk into my apartment, the first thing I see that I bought in Tribeca is: The gentleman I’m dating is in the flower business, so the first thing I see and smell when I walk into my apartment are gorgeous Japanese paperwhites or roses with eucalyptus berries from Floratech.

17. How I stay fit: Hot power vinyasa yoga and running outside.

18. Where I get beautiful: Hands down, and I mean it, Eden Day Spa on Broadway [left]. A girlfriend of mine introduced me to this glorious spa years ago. And now we celebrate at least one or two birthdays there every year. Patrons get to lounge in a little garden after their treatments, rather than being immediately thrust out into busy Manhattan streets. Eden Day Spa also throws in a free lunch with any treatment over $100. Tuna sandwiches. Salads. Fruit. Totally healthy.

20. A recent enthusiasm: Chicken hearts at Churrascaria Tribeca. Most people assume that I must be vegetarian because I’m Indian. This should dispel that notion.

22. A recent case of sticker shock: Being a first time filmmaker, the cost of sound-mixing and color-correcting a film.

27. I’ve never been to Odeon for brunch and I don’t know why.

29. How does the antique store Urban Archaeology stay in business?

30. I tend to take out-of-towners to: Cercle Rouge. It’s New York enough and chic, but still offers things that friends visiting from Pennsylvania will like: burgers, fries, wine.

31. I wish I lived in…. Oh man. I just did the Friends of Duane Park’s annual loft tour of Tribeca residences this past summer. The lofts above Bouley are amazing. Homey in a Park City, Utah, way, not typically Tribeca industrial.

32. My very favorite spot: Currently, I’m on a tour of Scotland, specifically through the Islay region of Scotland known for its big peaty mossy single malts. I love saddling up to the bar at Brandy Library, and ticking off everything I’ve already had from their never-ending menu, and asking for something new….

33. Pet peeve: Dirty public restrooms. Drives me bananas.

34. If money were no object, I’d buy my loft on Duane Street and then travel the world. Buenos Aires and Patagonia. Bali. Istanbul. Nice and Bordeaux. Lake Como. Rajasthan. Arizona.

37: A Tribeca celebrity I’d like to run into: Christy Turlington. She’s beautiful.

38. The most romantic spot around: The little tucked-away former carriage house Smith & Mills. Love the lighting. Love that it only seats like 20 people.

39. Tribeca could use more grocery stores and fewer restaurants.

40. If I could change one thing about the neighborhood: More mom-and-pop grocery stores.

42: My best Tribeca story: I was at a raging party uptown somewhere, and I really wanted to see this Bengali film that was playing at Tribeca Cinemas as part of the New York Indian Film Festival. It’s not often that I get to hear my native language, and I grab every chance I can to immerse myself in it. On a Friday, at 10 p.m., not one friend was interested in hunkering down for some esoteric documentary about the evolution of Bengali folk song. So I went on my own. I remember making conversation with the gentlemen who sat in my row and going to Cercle Rouge afterward. We’re still friends today. It was one of my more spontaneous and very fun moments!

44. Someone who lives here who I really think you should meet: Bedside manner is something I’m very big on. I don’t care if you’re my lawyer, my dermatologist, or the person who delivers my laundry. How you treat people always sticks. Come meet Eugene Schafer [left] who started his sports rehab and fitness facility ARC Athletics a few months ago at 5 Harrison. He’s from Indiana, and that great positive Midwestern attitude separates him from most, especially in like New York City. I’ve known him since 2001, when he first worked in Harlem. Book a private personal training session. I promise, his kettle-bell workout will hurt—in a good way.

45. Proof that change is good: I was a reporter for CNN when 9/11 happened. Every day, after hair and makeup, my car service would wind down the streets of Manhattan to the New York Stock Exchange. And every day, I saw the metal frames, withered and twisting up from the ground, from the space that once was the Twin Towers. In those daily drives, I witnessed the evolution of Tribeca and beyond. When my cousins came to visit last summer from India, I mused, “This area is so different now” as I fast-forwarded through the images in my head—like a cartoon flip book. It’s amazing to see all the residences, restaurants, and boutiques that have cropped up. Change is good.

46. If I couldn’t live here, I’d live in… Malaga, Spain.

47. I wish you had asked me about: I want my next documentary to be about women’s economic empowerment. Growing up in a traditional Indian family, it’s a really important subject to me.

Plus: Michelin stars abound; Cuomo gets behind Greek Orthodox church; Sean Avery cut; artist Katia Santibañez.

••• “Gov. Cuomo [...] is maneuvering to move construction of a new St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church back to a site the PA had previously ruled out. The original church, destroyed on 9/11, stood at 155 Cedar St.—where the PA wants to build the new one. But sources said Cuomo has secretly tapped construction expert Peter M. Lehrer to find a way to rebuild the house of worship at PA-owned 130 Liberty St., the former Deutsche Bank site across the street from the WTC. Such a move could arrest progress on interlocked WTC projects that finally found traction, insiders fear.” —New York Post

••• “PayPal is going to be setting up a pop-up store in downtown Manhattan, New York to showcase some of the new tools and technologies the payments giant will debut in the next few months. The space will be located at 174 Hudson [the Hudson & Broad event space], which is located in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan. Over the next 3 and a half months, PayPal will be inviting merchants to come visit the space where they will have the opportunity to get real-time demos of the technologies in realistic point of sale scenarios. The store, which will launch on November 1, will also feature a QR code for people passing by to scan and see more details on the PayPal’s new technologies.” I’ve still never seen anyone scan a QR code. —Techcrunch

When I talk about enthusiasms, I mean things that have caught my attention—or in this post's case, my appetite—in a big way.

This might be one upbeat post too many, what with all the valentines, but let’s try and enjoy this positivity while it lasts, OK? When I talk about enthusiasms, I mean things that have caught my attention (or in this post’s case, my appetite) in a big way; they may or may not morph into permanent turn-ons.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

As far as I’m concerned, the cocktail of the summer is the Americano (equal parts Campari, sweet vermouth, and seltzer). Ideally, the vermouth is Dolin, which is available at Chambers Street Wines.

Me: Do you plan on carrying the larger bottles again?
Clerk: No, we only carry the smaller bottle now. It goes bad after a while, so—
Me: Not in my house, it doesn’t.

(You can buy bigger bottles at Pasanella and Son.)

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Frankly Wines sells a bottled drink called Americano—from a company called Vergano—that has some of the richness of an Americano cocktail, but not all of the complexity or the punch (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). The shop’s owner, Christy Frank, recommended it mixed with seltzer, but I preferred it undiluted, on the rocks. This post isn’t making me look good, is it?

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Sometimes, such as during the day, I drink non-alcoholic beverages. I met up with Alexia Brue of Well + Good one afternoon at Kaffe 1668, and the café didn’t have lemonade, so I halfheartedly ordered an iced decaf. Alexia recommended I try an iced Americano—it was as if she knew exactly what I needed, because I loved it. The morning drink of the summer is the Americano, too! It’s a wet, hot Americano summer!

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I think Jehangir Mehta’s Mehtaphor is the most interesting restaurant in Tribeca right now—leaving aside Corton, I suppose—although I’ve found one dish I love, and so I’ve stopped being all that adventurous. It’s the Indian street burger (still iffy about that name), and it’s kind of like an Indian sloppy Joe. Best of all are the garlic fries on the side. Having been burned by garlic powder—the devil’s work—too many times in the past, I was wary at first, but (as I’ve since learned) Mehtaphor fries the potatoes in garlic-infused oil. And you only get a handful, so they’re precious, the way anything fried should be.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I knew Takahachi Bakery made ice cream and sorbet, but I had never tried it, probably because I tend to go in the morning for an iced Americano. The other day, I looked in the case, and I saw that one of the flavors was black sesame. I was back a day later. The black sesame ice cream is nice and pillowy, and it’s a gorgeous gray. I ordered it with vanilla because that seemed the flavor least likely to clash. But I’ll be back for the yuzu ice cream….

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

The Harrison dessert menu tends to include a slice of “birthday cake,” and when I was there recently to try the $30 prix fixe lunch—a great deal, but come hungry—I chose it as my dessert. Just look at it! I felt like I should swing a bottle of Champagne at it and give it a name.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I’ve finally persuaded Adam that we can’t go to Tamarind Tribeca without getting the dal makhni, “black lentils simmered overnight on a slow fire with onions, garlic and ginger.” I haven’t had it in two weeks and I can call to mind precisely how it tastes. I would eat it every day if I could.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

After my friend Lisa and I went on the East River Ferry and to the new East River Waterfront park, we stopped in the new Milk Street Café on Wall Street for refreshment. They make a good mango smoothie, but what I enjoyed even more was sitting in the picture window and watching the passersby. The window is wide enough that you get enough time to actually inspect people, but not so wide that they get time to inspect you.

Plus: Denise Richards; July 4 barbecue; Sarah Mlynowski's new novel; Tamarind Tribeca.

••• Denise Richards will appear at Barnes & Noble Tribeca on July 26. Letting you know now in case you want to, I don’t know, clear your calendar?

••• Speaking of books: A real writer, Sarah Mlynowski—you may recall the interview that Anojja Shah did with her—has a new young adult novel, Ten Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn’t Have).

••• From Ward III: “We’re grilling for the 4th of July! As most of us don’t have backyards, and not all of us can get away for the weekend, we’ve bought a bad-ass smoker, and are setting it up outside the bar. $10 gets you a massive plate of food. $15 gets you the same plate, a pint of beer inside, and a sneak peak at the brilliant Cheryl Lins’ new line of aged whiskies.” This is in addition to the Bogardus Plaza event, I think.

••• Remember that mural on the plywood at Franklin and Broadway? @Chris_kruli tweeted a post on madeinbrazilblog.com (NSFW) that says it’s by Brazilian street artist Zéh Palito. It’s in honor (or part of?) his “first solo show at FB Gallery in Tribeca. The exhibit is entitled Love, Peace and Unicorns, and runs until July 17. For pictures and more information, visit Zéh Palitos’s flickr.” Pictured: Palito at work on the mural (courtesy FB Gallery, which I did not know about till now….).

••• Had another good dinner at Tamarind Tribeca last night, but it ended on a sour note. One of the entrées we ordered was a special prawn curry, and we were surprised to discover when the bill came how much it cost. Understanding that you haven’t tried the dish, how much do you think it might reasonably cost? (The two shrimp entrées on the menu were $25 and $26.) Or at what point does the server/restaurant have an obligation to mention the price? Careful readers will know this is a sore spot with me….

Opera singer and Bogardus Garden advocate Tory Weil on the restaurant with a great Sunday-night deal, the celebrity resident she tried to impress, and the apartment building she covets.

“We didn’t have any downtown friends or roots in the neighborhood,” says Tory Weil about moving from the Upper West Side in 2007. That changed when she was approached about joining the Friends of Bogardus Garden—and now she’s the president of the board. When the St. Louis native isn’t working on new initiatives such as the Bogardus Plaza, she sings professionally (she’s a mezzo-soprano who has performed at the Santa Fe Opera, among many other venues) and takes care of her two kids, Fiona (pictured) and Arlo. Right now, she’s particularly excited about two Bogardus Garden events. Sunday, Apr. 17, will bring Jazz and Poetry on the Plaza with the Alex Levin Trio and Emefe and an assist from Poets House; and Saturday, May 7, is May Day. “It’s our biggest event of the year,” says Weil. Bogardus Garden and Plaza will have live music and kids’ activities (including crafts with Playgarden and sugar-cookie decorating). “Now that we have the additional space provided by the plaza, it will be the best one yet!”

How long have you lived in the area?
I have lived in the area for nearly four years.

Which restaurants do you frequent most often?
I cook most of the time, which became extra fun once Whole Foods opened. As for eating out, we go through phases with the local restaurants. We have frequented Centrico, Marc Forgione (particulary great on a Sunday night for its amazing prix fixe), The Harrison, and, most recently, we’ve been hitting Tamarind (left).

Which restaurants do you tend to go to for a special occasion?
For special occasions we have gone to Bouley—one of the most stunning restaurants around. Megu is pricey but fun and delicious. My husband often retreats to Warren 77 to watch sports “with the guys” and swears by the bar food.

Where do you order in (or get take-out) from? Are there dishes you always order?
We order in from Muscle Maker Grill and just had our first delivery from Yorganic. It was fast, healthy, and yummy. For the never-ending “where can we get decent Chinese food delivered” dilemma, we have settled on Sammy’s. If you have any better ideas, do tell!

Which shops do you find it hard to resist popping into when you pass by?
I live around the corner from Petticoat Lane (right) and I love that it has a little bit of everything, from bathing suits to bras to jewelry. Jennifer, the owner, is an amazing saleswoman and can fit anybody! I also love to poke around Stella and pretend that one day I will properly set a table with a tablecloth and cloth place mats.

What was the last non-essential item you bought in Tribeca?
An itsy-bitsy-teeny-weenie white-and-black polka dot bikini from Petticoat Lane. I went in to buy a one-piece suit that would be appropriate for family swim at the Downtown Community Center. Oh, well….

Are there any services (salon, fitness, etc.) that you’re particularly glad are in the neighborhood?
I’m thankful for New York Sports Club on Reade Street. I’m there almost every day and although it’s not flashy or sexy, it has what I need and, unlike Equinox, you get to have your own TV on the cardio equipment and now you can plug your iPod/iPhone right into your personal screen to watch/listen to your downloaded shows and music.

What’s the area’s best-kept secret?
The area’s best-kept secret is Goodie Girl Cafe, in the lobby of JCP at 146 Duane. Shira Berk whips up fabulous vegetarian soups, sandwiches, and salads. She also makes delicious muffins, biscotti, and other treats. Her chocolate-chip cookies are crazy good and she just started to make a fabulous gluten-free version. Yum, yum, yum! And today I discovered the Poets House just across the highway. They have an amazing new facility, and tons of programming for both children and adults. They will be joining us on the plaza to celebrate National Poetry month and Jazz Appreciation Day. I can’t wait to take my kids!

Where do you always take out-of-towners?
We love to take out-of-towners on a walk through the Bogardus Plaza to Duane Park and then walk up Staple Street to the Harrison for dinner.

What’s your favorite part of the area (street, park, whatever)?
My favorite part of Tribeca is, of course, the Bogardus Garden and Plaza. When the weather is nice, it’s wonderful to see flowers and shrubs blooming in the garden and so many people sitting at the tables in the plaza. The plaza in particular brings New Yorkers together. It’s not uncommon to see students, mommies, nannies, construction workers, office workers, and tourists all enjoying a peaceful moment in the heart of Manhattan.

Which neighborhood building do you wish you lived in and/or owned?
I love the Gerken Building, where I live, but I occasionally pine for a quieter corner, especially now, during the Chambers Street reconstruction project. The building that I secretly covet is 166 Duane. It’s on Duane Park, it’s still close to transportation, and best of all, it has a doorman.

Your most memorable celebrity sighting?
It’s fun to tell friends that we often have dinner at the same time as Jon Stewart on Sunday nights. And I was once at a birthday party for Christy Turlington’s son. She is totally down to earth and normal, but I really wanted to look pretty for the party. Why I thought that I could look good at 40 weeks pregnant at a party hosted by a supermodel is a question that I still ask myself. Anyway, I blew out my hair and put on a cute maternity outfit and makeup. I showed up to find a room full of parents in jeans and “I just rolled out of bed” hair. I stuck out, to say the least. The most exciting moment was when Gwyneth Paltrow breezed in with her kids and my daughter ended up seated next to Apple and even fed her pizza.

Any questions you wish you’d been asked?
I wish that there were more restaurants that had big healthy delicious salads in a nice setting for lunch. I miss Josie’s from the Upper West Side. I also would love to see an upscale kitchen-supply store. I cook a lot and often wish that there was something in the ‘hood that was more unique than Bed Bath & Beyond. Oh well, you can’t have everything—and we sure come close.

••• Was Jon Stewart instrumental in getting the 9/11 health bill passed? (The New York Times)

••• Two couples from Tribeca had dinner at Aboca Spasso, in the West Village, before it officially opened. Can someone explain the point of this New York Times column? Is it really that people often have meals together?

••• “Pace University is on a mission to house its students within a five-minute walk from its City Hall-area campus, and the school just announced a major deal. It’s partnering with SL Green Realty Corp. to build a new 24-story dorm at 180 Broadway , at the corner of John Street.” (Curbed)

••• Maximilian J. Riedel, the 33-year-old scion of the Riedel glass company, lives in Tribeca, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Excerpt: “Since I moved to America in 2001, I like being part of the American culture, so there is nothing better than eating a great steak. With friends or even by myself, I love to order filet mignon. There’s a spot in my Tribeca New York City neighborhood called City Hall that prepares it just the way I like it—rare, dry, no sauce, with a little Dijon mustard on the side, served with french fries and chopped tomatoes. I like to wash it down with a nice glass of Pinot Noir.” Read the whole Q&A to find out which sense is Maximilian J. Riedel’s favorite!

••• 1 World Trade Center is getting glassed. (Curbed)

••• The L.A. Times profiles Otto Penzler of the Mysterious Bookshop.

••• “Along with its focus on the tragic losses of that day, the Sept. 11 Museum will give visitors a feeling for what it was like for residents and workers whose lives were changed on that fateful day.” (Tribeca Trib)

••• Corton earned (right word?) 48 violation points from the city’s department of health. I feel like we can now stop paying attention to these scores. (Eater)

••• Someone was arrested for attempting to rob the Citibank on Hudson (before getting laughed out of the building). (DNAinfo)

••• I had never read Marc Shepherd’s New York Journal before; I like the way he writes about restaurants. Anyway, Tamarind Tribeca made it to his top-ten new restaurants list, while Plein Sud made it to the worst-ten list. Also, he filed a disappointed review of Industria Argentina.

••• Helen Simonson, whose Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand was a charming throwback, will be at Barnes & Noble Tribeca on Apr. 28. If you start knitting a tea cozy now, you’ll have it ready by then to toss to her up at the lectern. (GalleyCat)

••• The New York Times didn’t think much of “The Greatest Russian Nutcracker” at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center.

••• “The Seaport Museum is looking to sell one of its historic schooners, sources said. The 117-year-old Lettie G. Howard has been part of the museum since 1968, but sources say the museum is now trying to unload it, possibly to address budget concerns.” (DNAinfo)

••• Kim Kardashian and Ciara (a singer) were photographed walking out of the Cosmopolitan Café [Locanda Verde was fully committed] the other day. I believe the restaurant had papered over the windows, presumably so a film crew wouldn’t have to work around gawkers on the sidewalk, of whom there were plenty—I know, because in trying to get around them, I was almost sideswiped by a bus, and let me be perfectly clear about this: I do not want to die, even indirectly, as a result of Kim Kardashian. That may be the last I’ll write about them, even though they’re staying at the Smyth. If you’re interested in their every move, Twitter is perfect for you. (Starpulse)

••• The New York Times printed Tamarind Tribeca’s recipe for Murg Malai Kebab.

••• Cass Lilien’s Window 24 was featured in a New York Daily News article about tiny shops: “Lilien, who’s pretty small herself—barely 5 feet tall—says she doesn’t feel claustrophobic in the space. The big plus is the small rent: Lilien pays just $500 a month. There is one drawback: no toilet. ‘They let me use the bathroom next door, and every so often I give them a bracelet,’ she laughs.”

••• “Sometimes, the simplest designs are the most complex. [Journalism-school students, take note: That's what I call a beard-stroking lede. —Ed.] Take Ben Van Berkel’s New Amsterdam Pavilion at the tip of Manhattan. The pinwheel structure was presented to the city by the Dutch as a reminder of our 400-year-old bond. Part tulip, part windmill, the pavilion was supposed to have opened last spring, but getting those smoothly curving panes of glass just so, as well as working out a deal with the contractors to install them, has delayed the project a handful of times now, putting the grand opening celebration off until next year.” (New York Observer, via Eater, although Curbed read the same article and deduced that the pavilion is “almost set to open for real.”)

••• “The return to North Cove Marina of the barge Hon. William Wall, the Manhattan Sailing Club’s floating clubhouse that spends summers moored in the middle of New York Harbor, signals the imminent start of two popular off-season programs [...]. “We’re going to be bringing back the train set that we housed aboard the William Wall in years past,” says Michael Fortenbaugh, the Club’s Commodore, referring to the elaborate, 100-square-foot diorama with enough linear track to stretch between Gateway Plaza and the World Financial Center. [...] For 2010, Mr. Fortenbaugh plans to enclose the William Wall’s upper deck, which serves as an outdoor bar in summer, and house the train set [...] there.” Plus there might be crepes. (Broadsheet Daily)

••• A Q&A with Elizabeth Berger of Downtown Alliance, “Lower Manhattan’s biggest fan.” (New York Observer)

••• “Leonardo DiCaprio and a group of male pals checked out the performers at Albert Trummer’s new Tribeca bar, Teatro, [the website now calls it both Theater Bar and Teatro] on Saturday. The star, Russell Simmons and hotel entrepreneur Jason Pomeranc were guests at a private party at the theatrically themed bar with performers including bikini- and feather-clad bar dancers ahead of next month’s official opening.” (New York Post)
