In the News: Roof Deck Fire

••• “Fire on a landscaped roof deck at 400 Chambers Street [Tribeca Park] sent smoke billowing into the night sky Monday evening. Nearly 80 firefighters responded to the all-hands blaze.”—Tribeca Trib. I was walking home from North End Grill when I smelled the smoke and headed over (causing my partner to call me an ambulance chaser). Anyway, I took this photo (and tweeted about it, which is why if you’re on Twitter you should follow @TribecaCitizen). No one was hurt, which is great, of course. I did get a kick out of seeing people working out in the building’s ground-floor gym….

••• “Tribeca’s just-opened Hale Organic Salon promises cutting-edge cuts and color, and a little something off-menu—air you can breathe. That’s the M.O. of owner Joe Murray, a ring leader of the city’s natural hair-salon movement.” It’s at 91 Franklin, where Rogan’s showroom used to be. I sensed something was up there, but the Roganites would give dirty looks if you paused to peek in, so I didn’t pursue it. —Well + Good

••• “I got really excited when I discovered the walk up window at Koko Asian Fusion on Greenwich (btw. Carlisle & Albany) where you could get quality General Tso’s chicken at a rock bottom price. [… They’re now] offering a different special over rice for $5.95 at the window every day. If you like restaurant quality Americanized Chinese or Thai food on the cheap, this is the place to get it.” It helps if you like chicken. —Midtown Lunch

••• The New York Senate’s redistricting plan is predictably wiggy: “State Sen. Daniel Squadron’s district currently stretches across Lower Manhattan, from Canal Street to Battery Park, and through parts of southern Brooklyn. The redistricting proposal would slice the western edge off of Tribeca and the Financial District, separating the World Trade Center and Battery Park City from the rest of Lower Manhattan and cutting Battery Park in half.” —DNAinfo

••• “Rosalie Joseph, the spirit behind years of Battery Park City events and a veteran casting director is teaming up with Manhattan Youth’s Bob Townley and Theseus Roche to launch a Lower Manhattan community theater.” —Tribeca Trib

  1. I live 2 buildings down… My husband and I were also surprised to see residents on lower floors watching TV seemingly oblivious while smoke billowed into the sky.
