Max Is Moving

It’s time once again to pick through the preliminary agendas for the monthly CB1 committee meetings. They’re subject to change, so if an issue is important to you, check here before heading off to the meeting. My comments are underlined.

P.S. I usually clean up the formatting but LIFE IS TOO SHORT.

Maybe I’ll reserve now for a window table at North End Grill. (Oh, wait, I actually have plans to go that night! And I chose it because I thought BPC was the safest place to be on St. Patrick’s Day, when the hooligans come out!)

Location: Community Board #1 – Office, 49-51 Chambers Street, Room 709

1) 83 Walker Street, application for special permit under section Zoning Resolution Section 74-712 authorizing waiver of height and setback requirements – Resolution That’s the one with the facade that’s an inversion of a cast-iron building.

2) 374 Greenwich Street, Ayesha Sushi III d/b/a Hana Sushi – Discussion Not sure I understand. Ashiya is the name of the sushi restaurant at 374 Greenwich (IPN). Could it be getting replaced by Hana Sushi? There’s a Hana Sushi on Seventh Avenue and 21st St.

3) 225 West Broadway, application for restaurant liquor license for Tribeca #1, LLC, d/b/a TBD – Resolution The old Barzinho space; this keeps coming up and keeps getting pushed.

4) 329 Greenwich Street, application for a restaurant liquor license for Luigi Iasilli or Entity to be Formed d/b/a Max Tribeca – Resolution The big news: Max is taking over the Industria Argentina space. (And Industria Argentina owner Stefano Villa is officially on my shit list. Why lie and say it’s reopening in two weeks? We spoke a few days ago. Just say “no comment.”) The folks at Max said they’d likely be keeping the current space on Duane, but there was no decision yet as to what would be there.

5) 41 Murray Street, application for restaurant liquor license for Brendyl Inc d/b/a Eamonn’s Irish Pub and Restaurant – Resolution

6) 70 Franklin Street, application for restaurant wine and beer license for Entity to be Formed – Resolution The other big news: The Peter Tunny space on the north side of Franklin (at Franklin Place) looks like it’s going to be a restaurant. This jibes with what someone told me recently about a new bar on Franklin—I thought they must have meant Near & Far Food Co., ostensibly coming to the Lafayette Bar & Grill on the other side of Broadway. This discussion promises to be interesting: It’s a huge space on a residential street. Let’s see if I can’t dig up a photo of when it was a temporary bookstore/gallery thing…. Here we go!

7)    Street Activity Permit Application by CB1 (Mardi Gras Festival Productions, promoter), Friday, August 10, 2012, West Broadway between Chambers Street and Barclay Street – Resolution

8)    77 Hudson Street, new application for a sidewalk café license for Zutto Squared LLC d/b/a Zutto – Resolution Loading-dock seating would be nice there.

9)    71 North Moore Street (AKA 385 Greenwich Street), new application for a sidewalk café license for No Moore Oysters LLC d/b/a Smith & Mills – Resolution For what, one table?

10) 32 White Street (AKA 2 Avenue of Americas), new application for a sidewalk café license for Tribeca Grand Hotel, Inc. – Resolution Huh. I guess this must mean in front of the hotel? It’s kind of a crazy spot.

11) 385 Greenwich Street, application for restaurant liquor license for No. Moore Oysters and Maritime LLC – Resolution Same as above, presumably. Unless Smith & Mills is taking over Ivy’s Bistro….

The following notices have been received for renewal, upgrade or transfer of wine and beer or liquor licenses:

  • 183 Duane Street, renewal application for restaurant wine and beer license for Tokyo Bay Enterprises NY Inc. d/b/a Tokyo Bay Japanese Restaurant

3) Accomplishments for 2011 and Goals for 2012 – Discussion

3/20     Seaport/Civic Center Committee – 6:00 PM

Location: South Street Seaport Museum, 12 Fulton St, Level 5

2) 36 Peck Slip, renewal application for a sidewalk café license for Goat Fifty LLC d/b/a Nelson Blue – Resolution

3) Centre Street, application for a wine and beer license for Michael Sinensky and Sean McGarr d/b/a Little Town Market, Centre Street – Resolution An address would be handy. According to Blackbook, the two men “juggle the ownership of SideBar, Vintage Irving, The Big Easy, Hudson Terrace, and the Village Pourhouse”—it’s like an alternate-universe New York, because I haven’t heard of any of them—”along with Michael’s personal projects: corporate event management, “disco sushi,” and the NewYearsEve.com.”

4) Brooklyn Bridge Project Noise

  1. Eric — does anyone ever thank you for doing this? I am, right now! And for the wonderful comments tucked in, here and there. Thank you. Again.

  2. @Carol: People do thank me, but one can never be thanked enough, right? (So thanks! And you’re welcome!)

  3. Carol beat me to it! Thanks for this. I had no idea 70 Franklin was going to be a new something or other. It’s such a great space. I’ve long said that if someone put a Bubby’s East (family friendly/comfort food) place here they’d make a killing.

  4. do we know if 70 Franklin going to be a bar or a restaurant?

  5. @Randy: From what I understand of this process, the phrase “restaurant wine and beer license” means there will be food. As to what degree the establishment will be restaurant, we’ll have to wait till March 14 to find out.

  6. I had my last (and I don’t mean latest) dinner at Max over a year and a half ago. I’d eaten at both locations and enjoyed it in the past, but my last dinner there was simply awful in every way, and expensive. Unless they’ve reformed other aspects of their gig since, it’s hard for me to believe they’re taking over a larger space

  7. I heard the space (Industria Argentina) was back on the market. Any truth to that?

  8. @ David – that’s been my experience of Max as well – we used to go often but they have definitely gone way down hill and after bad food and worse service, I won’t go again.
