••• In a column about the Hunts Point neighborhood in the Bronx, New York Times class warfare columnist Ginia Bellafante writes, “Among 16- to 19-year olds, 21.5% are neither in school nor working. This figure, known as  the ‘teen idleness’ rate, compared with 3 percent in Tribeca (where presumably some number of those teenagers officially doing nothing are spending a gap year between Dalton and Stanford, writing memoirs and screenplays.” Obviously, one feels for the people—and especially the children—of Hunts Point. But let’s talk about that snide aside: As with any name-drop, its purpose isn’t just to provide humor; it’s to let everyone know that even though Bellafante can write about poor people, she’s entirely familiar with the world of the rich. (The part about writing is just weird coming from a writer.)
