Seen & Heard: Canal Rubber Is on the Market

••• LRG found the listing for 329 Canal, a.k.a. 6 Greene, and both Canal Rubber and Canal General Merchandise (apparently a.k.a. “Hot Rod”) are on the market. The listing also says that the Gregory’s Coffee chain is opening in the area soon.

••• From the FDNY via Community Board 1: “The FDNY will be hosting open houses on Saturday, May 6, 2017. We would like to invite you to attend an open house in your neighborhood! Sessions will be held either from 11 a.m.-1p.m. or 1 p.m.-3 p.m. To find out the time/location of your nearest firehouse or EMS station, click on this link for our interactive map. Throughout the day Firefighters, Paramedics and EMTs will be educating the public about fire and life safety, conducting demonstrations, discussing the Department’s storied history, and offering tours of FDNY apparatus (engines, ladders and ambulances). Thanks to generous support from the FDNY Foundation, members will be distributing fire safety coloring books, fire helmets for children, flashlights and magnets with messages promoting fire and life safety tips.”

••• Coming up at Pier 26: “The 3rd Annual Hudson River Park Games on Saturday, May 13, is a day that offers the ideal combination of fun, fitness and competition like no other, presented by the nonprofit group Friends of Hudson River Park. Kick-start your summer fitness with The Games’ signature event—Healthy on the Hudson, a personal fitness challenge featuring a Yoga Pod, Bootcamp Turf and Spin Stage on Pier 26. All classes are $20 each (half of what they usually are) and go toward maintaining all of the free programs offered in” the park.

••• From Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer: “Our borough’s empty storefronts need filling! Join me, my staff, and volunteers on Sunday, May 21 as we conduct a census along the length of Broadway for vacant commercial storefronts. Each surveyor will sign up for a number of blocks to report the addresses of vacant storefronts, the former occupants, and possible ideas on the types of businesses needed in the neighborhood. To register, please email your name and phone number to info@manhattanbp.nyc.gov with the subject line ‘Storefront Survey.'” Good luck with that.

••• Next Tuesday, May 9, is Pen Parentis’s latest literary salon: “Kristopher Jansma is an award-winning poet; Stewart Lewis returns to the Pen Parentis stage fresh from a performance of his rock band at Rockwood Music Hall; Alice Kaltman writes prolifically about surfers and mermaids; New York Times writer John Freedman Gill’s debut novel, The Gargoyle Hunters, was recently lauded as ‘tender, funny, and achingly sad,’ a love letter to the architecture of New York City. Admission is free but RSVP is recommended via their website at penparentis.org/calendar.”

••• Mandarin Seeds appears to have found a new home at 23 Warren. (It was at 279 Church, on the floor that is now the second half of Lyons Den Power Yoga.)

  1. Canal Rubber closing would be like the death of New York to me. I truly recommend everyone take a look at this last little bit of old New York while you can. It is quite eclectic and a lot of fun.

  2. I will miss it and the rubber smell.
