2017 Shop-Local Gift Guide (Part 2)

While you’re out and about, there’s no law saying you can’t pick up a little something for yourself, too. Note: I’ve included items that caught my eye, but there’s a whole lot more at every shop. I wasn’t price-sensitive, so please don’t whinge about how expensive something is or I’ll delete your comment.

STEVEN ALAN
••• Do you know how hard it is to find a backpack, like this Taikan one ($80), that doesn’t have those annoying flaps over the zippers? Plus, army green is always in style.
••• Knit hats make good gifts because they tend to fit ($98).
••• Chic meets comfortable: Demylee women’s sweater ($334).

·····················

GROWN & SEWN / RED WING HERITAGE
••• Nearly every man looks sexy in a Henley shirt ($68).
••• For all those folks who don’t carry cash anymore—and personalized foil stamping is available ($80).
••• Cotton ragg socks ($18).

·····················

BALLOON SALOON
••• The best part about these googly eye stickers might be the word “emergency” on the can ($10).
••• Mini Marquee ($20).
••• Color Smoke Balls ($3).
••• And best of all, the Prank Pregnancy Test, perfect for teenage girls who want to freak their parent(s) out ($9).

·····················

A UNO TRIBECA
••• Long gloves make winter glamorous ($130).
••• Tzuri Gueta’s sculptural rubber bracelets (lower one $275).
••• Slouchy knit hat ($85).
••• All the proof you need that women get the best hats ($175).

·····················

BOOMERANG TOYS
••• I asked what kids want this holiday season, and I was told Fingerlings, which Boomerang doesn’t currently have. In second place is Kid Robot stuffed cheesy puffs ($62). I asked what exactly a kid would do with the cheesy puffs: “Take them out and play with them.” Duh.
••• Also popular: “Anything unicorn.” I liked the Jellycat one at right the best ($33).

·····················

IBIZA
••• Silk scarves in vivid colors; the bright orange one is $48.
••• I seem to have a thing for hats this year; Michael Stars flat-top fedora ($68).

·····················

ONDA BEAUTY
••• Pair the Herbivore coconut milk bath soak ($32) with a candle ($39).
••• Pretty Fluorite bowl ($225).
••• The Self Care Set of crystals ($54) probably makes a better gift than the Sexual Energy one, unless you’re shopping for a frenemy.

  1. Thank you so much for doing these guides. Way too easy to get used to the Amazon Prime of it all. Shop Local!

  2. Muji on Howard and Bway offers fun, inexpensive, minimalist Japanese commodities such as sweaters and other clothes, socks, hats, gloves, bedroom slippers and other accessories, toothbrushes and holders for them, containers of many sizes and countless shapes for every storage need, travel accessories, notebooks and pens galore, aromas… High quality, beautiful design; I find everything in that store appealing.

  3. The prank pregnancy test is classic!

  4. I know this must have been a pain, but thanks for the effort and the humor. Plus, there are a few places here I hadn’t heard of. Will definitely do a few laps of the nabe for xmas shopping thanks to this list…
