Laughing Man Wants to Expand Its Street Seats

From Community Board 1…. My comments are indented on the line below.

Please note that this is a preliminary list. Be sure to check back for additional edits. Notify CB1 two days in advance, if wheelchair access is required.

2/6 Battery Park City Committee – 6:00 PM
Location: Asphalt Green, 212 North End Avenue
1) IGU – Update on the North Cove Sailing Club
2) Brookfield – Update on 200 Liberty – Retail

So Brookfield is planning on adding retail to 200 Liberty? (That’s the southernmost tower in the complex.)

2/8 Landmarks & Preservation Committee – 6:00 PM
Location: Community Board 1 – Conference Room, 1 Centre Street, Room 2202A-North
1) 8 Jay Street, application for storefront renovation – Resolution

8 Jay is the old Artflag space.

2) 22 Barclay Street, application for portico statues – Resolution

St. Peter’s Church. One hopes the statues have more appeal than the cross the church put up on Church Street.

3) 115 West Broadway, application for installation of ADA Ramp – Resolution
4) 101 Reade Street, application for installation of ramp – Resolution

We’re going to see a lot more applications to add ramps if someone doesn’t find a way to stop lawyers from abusing the Americans with Disabilities Act.

5) 52 Thomas Street, application to install 15 rooftop mechanical condensers – Resolution

I wondered what the mock-up was for (see below). They’ll be clearly visible from across the street.

2/14 Licensing & Permits Committee – 6:00 PM
Location: Manhattan Borough President’s Office, 1 Centre Street, 19th Floor – South side

Tribeca
1) 184 Duane Street, application for expansion of Street Seats for Laughing Man Coffee – Resolution

When Laughing Man tried this last year, the committee rejected it. From the Unofficial Minutes: “The committee acknowledged that the Street Seats installation is popular, but it ultimately couldn’t justify the expansion; the vote against the project was 6-0-1-1, the last two being an abstention and a recusal. As he left, Steingard noted that there were 350 signatures in favor, and minimal opposition—indeed, no other neighboring business objected. ‘The committee suddenly outweighs the community?’ he asked, to no answer.”

UPDATE: “We are asking for half the extension as last year (8 feet),” says Laughing Man’s David Steingard.

2) 285 West Broadway, review of complaints and police activity for Haus – Resolution

From what I hear, this should be extremely interesting.

UPDATE: N. noticed that this has subsequently been canceled. I think CB1 wants to wait till Haus agrees to show up, which may never happen.

  1. The agenda on CB1’s site marks the discussion of Haus as cancelled.

  2. No, no, no more seats for Laughing Man! They have enough already. Duane Street space needs to be shared
by all businesses and citizens! Do not overextend your welcome.
