Seen & Heard: NYPD Meeting for Tribeca Residents

••• The 1st Precinct Neighborhood Coordination Officers for the Tribeca sector are having a community meeting this Wednesday at New York Law School (room W301); doors open at 6 p.m. for refreshments, and the meeting starts at 6:30. You can RSVP at dinah.bodden@nypd.org. I can’t make it, but perhaps someone could ask about the recurring problem of drivers turning right from White Street onto W. Broadway, then driving against traffic so they can turn onto N. Moore.

••• Xi’an Famous Foods is opening in FiDi: “I walked by this sign on Liberty Place, the small street between Liberty and Maiden Lane. The hole-in-the-wall Chinese place has been closed for a while and it seems under construction inside.” The company confirmed the new location, saying it should open in a month or so. Unless there’s another one in the works somewhere, this will be the 11th outpost in Manhattan.

••• The liquor-license application discussion for The Whiskey Tribeca, to open at 6 Murray (where Manhattan Proper is now), has been postponed till December.

••• The new Moxy Hotel in FiDi has a massive video screen above its entrance. More appropriate for Times Square than narrow little Ann Street….

••• From W. yesterday: “Crazy winds at the 9/11 Memorial, where the water was blowing up and out of one side! You couldn’t even walk by!”

  1. Moxy also plays music all day and night at the entrance. Da Claudio does too as well at night, but it was never too loud, and it helps people find it. Anyone know if that is legal?

    • There are stores that do that also. Some such stores are LOUD, with speakers outside. I’m also curious if this is legal.

    • The Moxy hotel’s video screen projects to Beekman St through Theatre Alley. Many of the residents at 145 Nassau St, including me, who have very large windows on Beekman that face Ann St, are negatively affected by the blinking colored lights at night. I called Margaret Chin’s office who is going to bring the issue to the Community Board. I also called the Moxy hotel (a division of Marriott) that clarified the videos are part of their hotel’s brand identity, saying they have no intention of making any changes. So much for “good neighbors.”

This is a huge problem, as drivers tend to also speed when doing this maneuver. A woman almost hit me two days ago in her white Audi.. I got a pic of her car and license plate.
Be aware people as it’s a dangerous corner.

    • It’s not “drivers.” It is principally police officers of the 1st Precinct in marked RMPs and the truck from FDNY Ladder 8. Never mind that they turn on their sirens and lights to make this illegal maneuver, it gives the appearance that these public servants have contempt for the law.
