Tribeca Then and Now: The Unknowns (Part 5)

As I’ve mentioned in the previous roundups of Jane Freeman’s photos from the 1980s and 1990s, many were taken at locations I’ve been unable to identify. Feel free to weigh in. N.B. It’s possible that some of these are not Tribeca.

Previously:
••• Franklin Street
••• W. Broadway and Staple
••• South Tribeca
••• Hubert, Collister, Beach, and Ericsson
••• Hudson Street
••• When Hollywood Built a Fake Diner in Tribeca
••• Washington Street and Environs
••• Upper Greenwich Street
••• Lower Greenwich Street
••• The Unknowns (Part 1) / Four remain unsolved
••• The Unknowns (Part 2) / One remains unsolved
••• The Unknowns (Part 3) / Three remain unsolved
••• The Unknowns (Part 4)

From James: “40 Hudson. ‘For about three decades, beginning in the mid-1960’s, the Hudson Electric Sales Co. occupied the ground floor'” (as cited in this Daytonian in Manhattan post).

James says this is the same as image #46 [in Part 4]: “From Robert Ripps: ‘#46 is the short section of the building that ‘fronts’ N. Moore between 65 N. Moore and what is now Smith & Mills at 71 N. Moore.'”

From James: “window east of eastern door in unpainted brick portion of Yves’s N. Moore St storefront.”

IMAGES #50-#54
Jane was shooting this as if she had a digital camera! UPDATE: From Bec Solo: “#50-54 is on the west side of Greenwich between Vestry and Desbrosses. You can sneak a glimpse behind the fencing.” I’m not 100% sure this matches up, but Google Maps (last shot above) is no help. UPDATE: “I think 50-54 is the parking lot and loading dock that was adjacent to 335 Greenwich,” says Judith. “A single-family residence was built there around 2000. The lot was owned by 16 Jay and was sold when that building was sold and converted to residences. I lost my southern lot line windows when this new building went up.” UPDATE: James concurs with Judith: “Yes, definitely. Note in image 54 the water tower and the building in the upper right background. Compare to this photo.”

This is 130 Watts, which I realized as I uploaded the photo.

  1. With fairly limited evidence I think 47 may be 94 Reade – an NYT article from the 50s says the Hudson Electric Sales Co leased the building. I can’t make most of the features line up. It looks like the middle columns have since been redone but the outer columns today have a similar base to the ones in the photo… shoot
