HELICOPTER NOISE LEGISLATION
US Reps Carolyn B. Maloney, Jerrold Nadler and Nydia Velazquez, along with Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer reintroduced the Improving Helicopter Safety Act in March, which would reduce helicopter traffic, improve safety, and cut down on noise pollution by prohibiting non-essential helicopters flight in New York City airspace. The bill was first introduced in 2019. Not sure if anything will come of it, but will track. Complaints about helicopter noise increased by 130 percent between October 2019 and October 2020.

FRED ASTAIRE STUDIOS ARE OPEN
ICYMI, Fred Astaire Downtown reopened along with other dance and exercise studios, and are now holding classes at their studio on Broadway and Reade. They also offer online classes now.

GOLDISH IS BACK OPEN
It was nice to see the storefront of Goldish on Murray activated again — especially since it offers such great window shopping.

  1. I attended a recent zoom meeting with Rep Carolyn Maloney on her Bill to ban non essential helicopters in NYC. I am grateful she is taking this on. She plans to present to Biden to get it into the new Infrastructure bill. I truly hope we make progress on this issue.

    • That’s fantastic. As a resident of Tribeca for almost 11 years, the helicopter noise tends to drive me crazy at times. It goes on for way too long with a lot of it seeming to come from around helicopters hovering over the WTC.

  2. Thank you for writing about the “Improving Helicopter Safety Act of 2021” HR 1643 introduced in March by Congressmember Carolyn Maloney, and cosponsored by NY Congressmembers Nadler, Velasquez, and Suozzi. Stop the Chop NY/NJ, a grassroots nonprofit organization, has a petition supporting the passage of that bill to ban nonessential helicopters over the NYC metropolitan area. Please go to http://www.stopthechopnynj.org to sign the petition, sign up for our newsletter, follow us on social media, donate, and volunteer. We need a large grassroots movement to pass this bill, and other local legislation as well.
    Thanks!
