More on traffic injuries in the neighborhood in 2023

When I did this post noting that Community District 1 has one of the lowest traffic fatality records in the city, Tribecan and transportation expert Charlie Komanoff challenged the figure I claimed to be citywide traffic deaths for 2023: he was right. But when I could not get the NYPD to give me that number, I went through their reports for each month in 2023, added them up and the total is 234. (I had 106, but was mistakenly looking at year-to-date in June.)

(For the record, it is still true that CD1 had no traffic fatalities in 2023.)

But since I had all the reports from the precinct, I figured I should examine the collisions we had in the precinct a little closer. They are reported by month by precinct, with most showing an address. I wish I had some better data crunching skills — I mean, I can, and I will, but I am slow and reluctant — to add here, but what I did instead is glance at each of the months in 2023 and look at the most frequent locations for injuries in Community District 1.

Below is a sample of what the charts look like with most extraneous info deleted, for all collisions in the 1st Precinct for December 2023. The yellow highlights are for collisions that resulted in injuries. The orange is for injuries of cyclists or pedestrians, since I think that is the perspective we need as local residents.

My hot take: be super careful when crossing Canal just about anywhere, but especially at the wacky intersection that is Canal, Sixth and Laight, which comes in for one block from Varick. And also beware all along Watts, where as we know, commuters are wild as they cram their cars into the tunnel at rush hour.

  1. Canal Street is a disgrace in so many ways. Why is there no enforcement of traffic laws? What happened to enforcing “don’t block the box” rules and rules against blocking pedestrian crossing paths? Red-light running is so common that is has become the norm rather than the exception.

    I also don’t understand the point of the traffic cops who just wave traffic through or not. They are acting as human traffic lights, when there already are traffic lights. Instead, they should be ticketing the people who don’t obey the traffic lights, or who otherwise drive dangerously, or who blow their horns for no reason.

    Of course, Canal Street is just the most obvious danger point. Yesterday I witnessed a motorcycle (not an e-bike, but a full on motorcycle with exceptionally loud motor) going up Broadway at high speed and weaving through the car traffic. Yes, up. That is, the wrong way.
