••• Tribeca Greenmarket report! This Saturday, the big news is the return of R & R Produce. “It’s part of the New Farmer Development Project, which identifies, educates, and supports immigrants with agricultural experience to establish their own economically and environmentally sustainable small farm businesses in the NYC region,” says market manager Kathleen Crosby. “They specialize in vegetables, herbs, and Mexican specialty produce from Orange County, N.Y.” This week, R & R will have garlic, onions, spinach, lettuces, cilantro, and dill; later on in the season, it’ll have hot peppers, frying peppers, bell peppers, tomatoes, and herbs. Also on Saturday: There will be field strawberries—at Lani’s Farm, Stokes Farm, and Prospect Hill Orchards—in much greater numbers. And Alex Weiss of Maple Ave Farm will do a cooking demo (stir-fried beef with market vegetables) at 11:30 a.m.

••• Further ahead, the Tribeca Greenmarket will host a Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest on Saturday, June 18, at 11 a.m.; prizes will be awarded to fastest, cleanest, and messiest eaters. Sign up at the Greenmarket table on Wednesdays and Saturdays before June 18, or e-mail kcrosby@greenmarket.grownyc.org.
