Seen & Heard: Park closings for July 4

PARK CLOSINGS FOR JULY 4
With the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks on the Westside again for the first time in 11 years (and it will be here for the next two years as well, leading up to the whopper, 2026), the NYPD is planning to close the Hudson River Park piers for the day. In Tribeca, Piers 25, 26 and 34 will be closed for the day. The playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts and dog parks on the park’s upland areas will be open until 3p. After 3, those areas too will be closed by the NYPD for safety. The park’s esplanade will remain open from Chambers to Houston all day; north of Houston, more extensive closures will be in place. More info here.

PRIDE IS THIS WEEKEND
And ICYMI, the major Pride celebrations will take place on Sunday, June 30. The party starts at 9a in Hudson River Park on Piers 45 and 46 in the Village; expect limited closures in the area, including on both sides of Route 9A, and expect the bikeway to be extra crowded that day. The Pride March starts at noon in Madison Square Park and travels south and west in a loop, ending in West Chelsea.

KIDS TIE-DYE IN DUANE PARK
Friends of Duane Park will hold a red, white & blue tie-dye event for kids on Saturday, June 29, from 10a to noon. Bring white T-shirts, socks, bandanas, dresses, pjs — you name it. The Friends will also be selling raffle tickets for the sold-out Dinner on Duane, to be held on Sept. 15.

READY FOR THEIR CLOSE-UP
Birder and Downtown photog Gail Karlsson sent along these great local shots: in Battery Park City, an adult European starling (with a yellow bill and white speckles on its black feathers) with a baby; baby Mallard ducks; on Governors Island, a young red-tailed hawk practicing flying but probably not yet able to catch its own food. It looks similar to the adults, but has light eyes, while adults have darker eyes.

  1. Thanks for the bird pix and here’s a link to your previous article about Gail Karlsson’s bird book for anyone who would like a localized fun guide. It’s about Battery Park but birds manage to get around. There’s a link in the article to buy the book.
