June 15, 2009 Restaurant/Bar News
A sign in the window at 77 Chambers (next to Carl’s Steaks, between Church and Broadway) says that a Checkers restaurant will be coming soon. Although the name “Checkers” seems to refer to a taxi, making it seem like a natural for New York, the company’s website makes much of the fact that Checkers restaurants have two drive-thru lanes, something that will be hard to pull off on Chambers Street (unless, that is, buildings keep falling down). The brand was founded in Mobile, Ala., in 1986, and merged with Rally’s in 1999; the two brands, which seem to be interchangeable, are headquartered in Tampa, Fla., and now have more than 800 locations total. The menu looks basic at best—”hand seasoned burgers, thick shakes, and famous seasoned fries”—and heart-stopping at worst. The nutrition information, if you dare, can be found here.
