June 18, 2009 Restaurant/Bar News
Michael, one of the three guys behind Ward III, the restaurant and bar coming to the old QDT space (Reade between Church and West Broadway), invited me over for a tour. Due to open in just over a week, Ward III is going for a casual, comfortable vibe, with decor (including three antique sewing machines) that references Tribeca’s manufacturing past. Michael and his partners, Abdul and Kenneth, don’t live in Tribeca, but they have years of experience here, having worked at local establishments such as the Odeon, Macau Trading Co., Grace, and Le Zinc. The endeavor certainly feels like a labor of love: Michael’s wife, Stefan, will be overseeing the food, and while I was there, some friends of theirs came by to help with the construction. Abdul said that they really want it to be the kind of place where you can hang out with other cool people—to that end, they’re taking down the TVs that were in QDT. If you’re not sure exactly what you’ll talk about, you can always ask for advice on what to drink: Customers will be able to order cocktails by choosing various ingredients, sort of like how you build a meal at Craft.
