In the News: Cobblestoned

••• The New York Times looks at how some streets—including some in Tribeca, notably upper Greenwich—are getting cobblestoned. I like the aesthetics of it as much as anybody, but up to now my only reservations were about the cost, which has to be extraordinary. And then, the other evening, I almost got run over twice by bicyclists who were choosing to ride on the sidewalk instead of the street, and it occurred to me what a pain cobblestones much be to bicyclists. A day later, in Soho, a cyclist asked for directions, and I sympathized about the cobblestones. “That’s why I’m riding on the sidewalk now!” he said, heading for the sidewalk. Did anyone stop to think about that?
