In the News: 1 World Trade

••• “Stuyvesant HS has cracked down on what had become a pot plaza near its campus after an administrator complained that marijuana smoke was wafting into her office window. Known as ‘The Alcove,’ the small concrete park sandwiched between the Battery Park City school and the West Side Highway is a magnet for pot- and cigarette-puffing teens, students said. ‘If people are doing drugs near school, they tend to do it in the alcove,’ said one junior, dressed in a T-shirt emblazoned with images of pot leaves. The area appeals to potheads because cops can’t get to it from the highway and teachers turn a blind eye to anything outside the building, the students said.” (New York Post)

••• “Had the Port Authority not changed the name of the building, we could have marked this momentous occasion by saying that ground zero construction crews are now “putting a face on Freedom.” It would have been so poetic! But instead, we’ll just say this: 1 World Trade Center is getting cladded, yo! Over the weekend the first piece of facade, a corner section covering floors 20-24, started going up.” (Curbed; photo courtesy Skyscraperpage.com, via Curbed)

••• I’m Too Young for This!, the nonprofit for young people with cancer (profiled here) got written up in a Wall Street Journal piece.

••• “Charles Urstadt, the former vice chairman of the Battery Park City Authority board who departed earlier this year, agrees with many of the criticisms of the Authority contained in the recent report by the New York State Inspector General.” (Broadsheet Daily)

••• “The annual IS 289 Book Fair will be held today  3 p.m.-8 p.m. and tomorrow from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., on the 5th floor outside the Art Room, IS 289, 201 Warren Street.
