February 23, 2011 Restaurant/Bar News
If you follow Tribeca Citizen on Twitter, you may have noticed that I’ve been on grand jury duty for the past three weeks. (I was called to regular jury duty, but then it somehow got switched—consider that a warning to anyone called to federal jury duty, or District Court.) As exasperating as the experience has been, I’m lucky in that I can run home for lunch, and even if I didn’t, I’d know where to go out. The grand jury staff recommends Chinatown and the delis on Broadway, which aren’t my cup of tea. (Although if anyone does know good spots in Chinatown, please add them to the comments. The only one I ever go to is Dim Sim Go Go.) Jurors tend to get so much time for lunch that they really should wander into Tribeca. So here, in one more act of civic duty, is a no-particular-order rundown of casual, recommendable restaurants on Church Street or east of it—in other words, within easy striking distance of the courthouses.

Walker’s is another reasonable lunch option, among others.
The court house crowd is a huge undeveloped market for Tribeca – They have wandered as far west as Greenwich Street, sometimes window shopping and sometimes just lost. In many cases, this is their introduction to this part of Lower Manhattan – let’s figure out a way to welcome them to the neighborhood.
When I had jury duty a year ago I went to Nice Green Bo and Le Pain Quotidien.
Maybe a tribeca restaurant association should make up a list of Tribeca restaurants with descriptions such as you have done & have them printed up and left as a handout at the various courts. I’m glad David Cleaver added Walker’s to the list as it is my family’s go to when we feel like going out & not dropping a bundle.
Would love to see not only the restaurants but other businesses get together on such a project.
While I am not the person to head it, feel free to e-mail me – and I would love to see my neighborhood Meet & Greet (always listed here in Tribeca Citizen) used as a spingboard for such an effort.
The next Meet and Greet will be Thursday, March 24 at Tribeca Beauty Spa – formal announcement will be made this week.
