Inside Damon Dash’s Vintage Shop

I’m guessing that many Tribecans are fascinated by what goes on inside Damon Dash’s headquarters at 172 Duane—the art gallery, the concerts, the record label, the people hanging around outside, the table tennis, the who-knows-what-else. Now there’s a vintage shop, Local 172 Trading Post. I stopped by this afternoon—the opening party is today—to check it out. The clothes are displayed in the room that functions as the Dash Gallery. One of the partners in the endeavor, Dave Barnett (above, hanging the sign), explained that it’s all “original vintage”—i.e., sourced for the shop, and there are items for men and women. The aesthetic is”classic American design,” he said. “We’re all designers, and we’re inspired by Americana.” (Cool screen-printed Local 172 T-shirts are also for sale.) Calling it a shop, however, is a bit of a misnomer—after today, the shop will be open on an “event basis.” Then again, you can presumably always buy online at local172.com.
