May 1, 2011 Arts & Culture, Events
Here are just a few of the highlights on tap this week. More info on these—and the full slate—is in the Tribeca calendar of events.
Monday
Lynda Carter sings—yes, she’s a singer—at Barnes & Noble.
Tuesday
“Jazz,” photographs by Hugh Bell, opens at Soho Photo: “Included in his exhibition are 16 x 20 inch portraits of Duke Ellington [right], Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Brew Moore, and Bobby Timmons.
Bell is also known for his “Jazz Giants” series, approximately 20 photographs of intimate and revealing moments of jazz greats such as Billie Holiday, Thelonius Monk, Sarah Vaughan, and Bobby Timmons that he took during the 40s, 50s and 60s.”
Wednesday
Bill Barrett’s sculpture 911 is slated to be unveiled in Finn Square. ••• A screening and panel discussion of Race to Nowhere, about education, is at P.S. 276. ••• Reality TV publicist Kelly Cutrone talks at Barnes & Noble. Is the caliber of speakers at B&N a reflection on the neighborhood? Can we get a well-known novelist once in a while? ••• John Barrymore stars in Counsellor at Law (1933) at 92YTribeca: “a fast-moving, crackerjack melodrama as only 30’s Hollywood could make ‘em—full of snap, verve, and well-tailored suits.”
Thursday
It’s Cinco de Mayo, which means Epifaneo, that event-space restaurant on Walker, is opening.
Friday
Adventures in Babysitting and Cocktail screen at 92YTribeca. (And I was just praising their repertory film schedule….) If I were evil I’d play The Beach Boys Song That Must Not Be Named; it came from Cocktail. (The video below, by the way, reimagines the movie as a film noir.) ••• Stephen Kellogg and Tift Merritt play City Winery.
Saturday
Bogardus Garden’s Celebrate Spring event with music, stiltwalkers, and card- and cookie-decorating projects (for Mother’s Day). ••• Torly Kid’s Teen Shopping Soirée, with discounts and a Hula-Hoop contest. ••• The Iron Mule Short Comedy Film Festival at 92YTribeca.
Sunday
Mother’s Day! Kate Moira Ryan’s “25 Questions for a Jewish Mother,” starring Judy Gold, is at the Museum of Jewish Heritage: “Bring your mom, sister, or daughter and share a few laughs with Gold and Ryan who embarked on a five-year journey across the U.S. interviewing more than 50 Jewish women.”
As for ongoing events, you might consider…
RH Gallery currently has a show of prints by Robert Rauschenberg, including this one, “ROokery Mounds—Grape Levee 1979.”
