My partner and I were house-hunting in Litchfield, Conn., last weekend—we’ve been doing it for years—and I got snippy with a broker who said she wouldn’t try to sell us and then proceeded to do just that. “You don’t have to be rude,” said my partner, which is true. So I vowed to make it a personal-growth area. Well, I failed again today.
I was out and about this morning when I walked by Liberty Green, one of two new condo-turned-rentals in north Battery Park City (the other is Liberty Luxe). The lobby was finished, with an attendant behind the counter, so I went inside. I asked if anyone had moved in yet, and he said, yes, one person had. He suggested I come back after 10 a.m. to visit the leasing office, which I did. I could just pretend that I’m interested in renting, but I don’t like to be dishonest, so I explained a few times that I have a website and I’d love to take some photos. Eventually, I was told: “What you can do is make an appointment—”
“Yeah, that’s not going to happen,” I said, walking out. Which was rude! I was crabby because it’s hot and—well, I’m often crabby. But I guess I was especially peeved because (a) if I had been interested in renting I would’ve been shown around right then; (b) I was doing Liberty Green a favor as much as it would’ve been doing me one. Still, I could’ve played along or, at the very least, not huffed out. What can I say? I’m working on it.
Here are some photos of the façade, the handsome lobby (two photos), and the 19th-floor hallway.
