Someone emailed to ask if I was going to offer advice on how to prepare for Hurricane Irene. “Nope,” I replied. “They should be getting that from far more trustworthy sources.” Besides, I’m out of town, not evacuating so much as enjoying the countryside. Good luck to everyone, and in the meantime I’ll be posting the usual crap non-hurricane news. Also, it’d be great if non-evacuees would describe in the comments (or email photos to tribecacitizen@gmail.com) what they’re seeing now and again, for the sake of those folks who had to leave.
••• Anna commented on what a ghost town Tribeca is (see below).
••• Michael sent in these photos from 4:30 p.m.:
And Sara took some great pix of stores boarded up (or in the case of Tribeca Issey Miyake, shuttered):
More photos from Michael (7 a.m.):
From Charles, a photo of Hudson River Park near Vestry:

Another photo from Michael (who syas that Jin Market/Picnic Basket is open):
TriBeCa is a ghost town! The line at Amish market took almost an hour since it’s the blast supermaket open down here. The best part is seeing what people are buying to weather th storm…the two highlights were a girl with hummus, peanut butter, and one bell pepper, and a guy with a gallon of orange juice and a family size bag of pita chips.
Duane Reade is out of big bottles of water, and Radio Shack is out of most batteries (sorry, we took the last Ds). But the most surprising part is that Tamarind is still accepting reservations for tonight…
Tribeca in Hurricane Prep Mode … 20 minute wait for groceries. 30 minute wait for a pedicure at Yuya.
walker and puffy’s are still open – both packed. everything else is closed
Love the Bloomberg press conferences. He is hilarious with the idiotic press questions. Ray Kelly should shoot them. (metaphorically, of course.)
Bloomberg/Kelly 2012.
ROC was open all day ..lunch and dinner till 8PM…the neighbors were so happy and appreciative! Tribeca really has wonderufl people..Rocco wants everybody to be happy…
ROC will be open for a disco brunch if all goes well..stay tuned..be safe…
xo Lady roc!
At 8 pm much more was closed but Plein Sud was open. We bought the last pizza slices from the pizzeria on the corner of Church and Murray and then went home to watch disaster movies (Deep Impact and Battle LA, kind of comforting)
Why does Bloomberg attempt to speak Spanish? He mangles every word
We evacuated from Battery Park City to the Duane Street Hotel, one of the few hotels open downtown. I want everyone to know how amazing the staff is–they actually spent the night there so the hotel could stay open. They were so kind and considerate about everything, including our not knowing if we would be there one night or two and when we would be able to leave. They allow pets so there were some dogs and we had our two cats, who eventually decided it was fine (you know how cats are). The room was small but nice and very clean. The staff should get a medal.
We had dinner at Mehtaphor, the restaurant on the ground floor, which we had been meaning to try for some time, and will definitely go back for vegetable dumplings and to try some of the other interesting dishes.
