•••”A judge backed up Mayor Bloomberg’s clean sweep of Zuccotti Park Tuesday, ruling that the city has the right to keep Occupy Wall Street protestors from camping out in what’s supposed to be a 24-hour open space for all of the public. The ruling from the bench by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael Stallman will likely be appealed so it’s not yet clear whether the city will reopen the park and allow in protestors—without tents.” —New York Daily News

••• “What once was a parking garage with 20-foot ceilings will soon be transformed into an art gallery and cultural center. Hotel Particulier recently signed a 10-year lease for 2,200 square feet at 80 Varick St., between Grand and Watts streets, downtown. […] Josh Bowling, the Sinvin Real Estate broker who represented proprietor Frederique Thiollet [said] “She’s taking a completely raw garage and converting it.” Mr. Bowling expects the center, [sic?] whose employees will offer champagne, wine and beer in true French style.” It’s to open in the spring. —Crain’s
The “garage space” at 80 Varick hasn’t been a garage for more than 30 years.
A “cultural center”? Is that what they’re calling night clubs now? Reading Hotel Particular’s facebook page, the intent and use of this space is clear, once you get past the convoluted language.
For those old enough to remember the Tribeca “cultural center” Area, that appears to be the model of “Hotel Particular”. How un-original. The new tenant should be aware that if they attempt to apply for a liquor license, every single prior attempt by a perspective tenant to obtain one has been defeated. Hotel Particular won’t be the exception.
This is Frederique Thiollet, proprietress of Hotel Particulier, and I would like to respond to the comment posted.
Hotel Particulier won’t be a nightclub; we will be closing at 10pm weekly and 12 am on weekends. Hotel Particulier will be indeed a special cultural point of connection with an art gallery, an independent curated accessory shop opening at 11am – And a café, teahouse in the back opening at 3pm with coffee, tea, small savory and sweet plates along with wine and champagne. We want to reintroduce the culture of café society with salons and revues in a very contemporary manner, all with savoir-vivre.
We also want to be an egalitarian enclave, there will be no red rope, and we welcome you all. To the person who wrote the posting, I sincerely invite you to come when we open in the Spring of 2012 and please kindly ask for me personally, I would be delighted to make your acquaintance. In regards to the liquor license, we won’t be offering a full bar but wine and champagne only – we already have been accepted for it by the community board – Hotel Particulier will be the exception.
I am looking forward to being part of your community and to contributing to the cultural landscape of New York City. Sincerely yours, Frederique Thiollet.
