The Ludlow Shop, J. Crew’s replacement for Crewcuts at 50 Hudson, has opened. Even though Ludlow is the name of a successful line of J. Crew slim-fit suits, and the suiting is the star of the Ludlow Shop, the store carries far more—basically anything men might wear with said suit, from dress shirts to vivid socks. It’s the kind of stuff that was in the back of the Liquor Store, but now there’s elbow room—as a result, the store is far more pleasant than the men’s J. Crew store in Soho. (The Liquor Store will remain the weekend-y, right-brain half of J. Crew menswear.) As has been the company’s way in recent years, other brands are in the house—you’ll find Alden shoes, Corgi socks, Timex watches, Dodo iPad cases. The styling is impeccable: Certain shoppers may be as taken with the decor (vinyl on the hi-fi, vintage art books, British music magazines, a Schoolhouse Electric IBM clock—in other words, details that hearken back to an era when men wore suits) as with the merchandise itself. The store even does monogramming.
The Ludlow Shop is at 50 Hudson (at Thomas), 212-587-3139; jcrewmens.com.
